Abs??

This only happens on ice. When I hit the brakes they make an awful noise and the brake pedal tries to come back up on it's own. WTF? Is that the ABS going out? Why does it only do this on ice?

Re: Abs??

The brake pedal coming back up on its own is ABS. The only time I've ever had ABS come on on me is when I'm out driving in snow. I don't know about the "horrible sound." My '04 1500 makes a dull and very, very rapid "thud thud thud thud thud thud thud thud" as the ABS works.

All you have to do to make ABS come on is lock 'em up with the brake, which is obviously way easier to do on ice than on dry pavement!

Some people get scared by ABS because they never have it come on until they get into an emergency. Then they don't use the system properly, and attempt to pump. In any situation where you need to stop YESTERDAY, stomp that sucker until ABS comes on, and hold it. If ABS doesn't come on, stomp it harder! ABS not on = you have more traction than you are using = you can slow down quicker! Stomp and steer.

thats just how the abs really work. the pedel being pushed back at you was because the abs was seeing that the tires were stopped and should be rotating. What abs do is squeeze and release many times faster than you could "pump" your brakes. the noise or feel of the brakes can usually be felt in the pedel and steering wheel and this is normal. abs depending on vehical normally do not work under 15 mph.

Okay I feel better. When it makes the noise and the pedal tries to come back up....what do I do? Do I push on down on the pedal or what?

ya, keep even pressure and let the abs do the work. Just be carefully when driving slow on ice, cuz below 15mph the abs doesn't work and you can lock up the tires. When you lock up tires you lose the ability to control your ride. usually not a problem on dry pavement but on ice most people panic (myself included) and forget the golden rule when drive on slick surfaces "easy does it" no quick sudden movements.

Re: Abs??

Stay on the pedal as hard as you have to to keep it trying to come back up at you. This is just the system doing its job, all you have to do is let it!

Be safe out there.

Re: Abs??

If you purchased your vehicle new, the sales person should have explained the operation to you.
Also there is a wealth of information in your owners manual...pick it up and read it sometime.
