Unhappy check engine light

Please Help!!!!

I have a 99 passport and my check engine light is on....the code given after diagnostics is EVAP emission control system malfunction...after speaking with a very rude mechanic, he stated that it was a very generic code and I just needed to pay the $100 to have it looked at...any suggestions?!?

Re: check engine light

Tighten your gas cap.

That is the number 1 reason the CEL will come on. And that code that it tossed looks like the correct one for a loose gas cap (also, filling up gas with the truck running will cause this too).

Happy Holidays!

I would check the evap cannister too, on some models if you fuel up while the engine is running you will fill the cannister with liquid fuel and you will have to replace it. expensive

Re: check engine light

Try using a higher octane gas or go to a newer gas station where you know their new storage gas tank is somewhat clean. You might want to pour also a gas line anti-freeze or water remover called ISO-HEET. Never purchase an Octane Booster bottle because it contains a chemical known to mess up your fuel system and along the engine.

That's all good stuff, but has absolutely nothing to do with an EVAP system code afisher5- tighten or try a new gas cap.

G/luck

You think you all know everything. We have a 1999 Honda Passport. We get all sorts of Check Engine Light and noticed it after using the lowest fuel grade. Went to Autozone to check the CEL for "FREE" and told us the error code pertains to emission related and just cleared the error code. We used a higher fuel grade and during winter we use ISO-HEET water remover during full tank and check engine light has not come back yet.
