Question remove grey on sideskirts-older E36

i heard that the gray sideskirts on the later models of E36 cars (ie; '92-96ish) can be rubbed off with some elbow grease. i followed the instructions and after 30 minutes i had no result, except a stronger right arm. the plastic that supposedly covers the original color is rock hard, does anybody know a good method of making the sideskirts the car color?
