89 Maxima vs. 04 WRX

Well ok. Don't just jump the gun and start hammerin me on how this is such a lop sided comparison. I just bought an '89 Maxima 3-speed auto w/ Overdrive, 3.5 L V-6 as a fun daily driver. I soon relized that this wasn't the slow family car it looks to be. I mashed the gas on the freeway from a 65 mph cruise to 126 mph with ease. So, I plan on showin it off. I know this kid, has an 04 ( maybe 03) WRX (non-STI) with an STI front-end conversion, scoop, and wing. Don't know for sure what he is packin, but he claims it has 265 HP (from the stock 227). I do know he regeared it from a 5-speed to a 6-speed. And he has his own dyno, so he may be truthful about the 265 Hp thing. Anyways, Another high schooler, with just the same, if not less driving skill challenged him to a 1/4 drag race. Thisother kid has an '89 Civic DX hatch w/ a B16 swap, Apex Cat-back, and minor dress up mods (cia, cam gears, etc.). This thing probably puts out 130 HP at the most. So they race, and every one knows WRX kid is gonna win. But nope, Civic kid beats him by about 1 1/2 car lengths. Afterwards, the kid wit the REX blames the lose of lack of enthusiasm, he said he didn't want to push it hard through every gear, and burn up his clutch. So as you see, I want to jump in on this also. He challenged me to a race 2 days after christmas. I got 4 deep dish Kazera 18's as an early Christmas present (doesn't really help performance, just thought i'd throw that in). And My dad always multiple checks on Christmas, so I am planing on getting a Nismo exaust, High comp Toyo's, did I also mentionthat I just recently put in a Vortech supercharger. That should put it at a near 300 hp. Hell, it did 0-60 in 6.6 sec stock.

Um, unless the driver of the wrx really sucks, you would get your anus handed to you on a silver plate...a wrx is a really fast car. Real fast. Unless he cant launch and your pulling a few cars on him from the start (even tho awd jumps at start)...Maximas are cool...But....I dont think they can smoke a wrx...

1) a wrx will smoke an 89 maxima
2) they didn't start putting 3.5L v6's in the maxima until 2002, your car has a 160 hp sohc v6 if it's a gxe and if you got an SE it'll have the 190 hp dohc VG30.
3) nismo doesn't make an exhaust for a maxima, especially not an 89, other than universal muffler tips.
4) i find it very hard to believe you got 140 hp out of a supercharger. did you assemble your own kit or did you buy one meant for your car? if it's the latter, who assembled the kit?
5) if that kid with the civic does have a b16 swap, he's putting out at least 160 hp at the crank stock, which is what your car puts out if it's the gxe, however he's probably ~1000 lbs lighter than you(also cam gears and CAI systems aren't just dress up mods).
6) you went from stock 15" rims to 18" rims, that's gonna kill the way your car accelerates.
don't get your hopes up on beating your buddies scubadu.

too many faults in this story. the driver of the WRX is full of shit, you don't burn clutch from hard shifts, only from take off. also if the WRX knew how to launch he should atleast have 4 cars on the civic to 60 since when you take off on those things, you hit 40mph almost instantly.

with great driver a stock WRX will run 14.0 in the 1/4. so with whatever mods he have it might take another 3 tenths off.

the civic probrably still probrably have an advantage up top. becasue from those mods he should be making over 160whp but weighing probrably 1000lbs lighter.

Okay, thread trasher, 1st of all, I swaped the 3.5 from an '02 20th anniversary Maxima, 2nd of all, Nismo does make an exaust for the Maxima, the NGXE3 Cat-Back that I imported from Japan it was made for Japan's model of the Maxima, and 3rd of all I realized that the whell killed my 1/4 mile times by .357 of a second. That's why I recently bought some Volk 16's.

i thougth the 20th anniversary max were 3.0's making 225 hp instead of 222hp.

also the 3.5's didn't come out in the 5th gen maxima's until 03-04 for that body style.

hmmmmmmmm

Re: 89 Maxima vs. 04 WRX

the 20th anniversary max was the 01 and you didn't say you bought a maxima and swapped the engine in, you said you bought a 3.5L 89 maxima (which you soon realized wasn't the slow family car you thought it to be, right?). well, if you did successfully swap the 3.5 into a 3rd gen you should visit the maxima.org forums cuz you're the first one to do it and you'll have 600 3rd gen maxima owners singing your praises. other than you, the only successful swap is into a 4th gen.
How'd you go about getting the VI and VTC to work? at what RPM does the VI engage? are you using the timing chain from the 3.5 or the 3.0? what kind of ECU did you use? which tranny did you use? what kind of engine mounts did you use? and according to your first post, this is a 3.5 with vortech supercharger right? how much power does it put out? what kind of track times do you run? how's your traction? got any pics???
