Laquer over acryilic

I started painting a Tamiya Hardshell with my airbrush using Testors acrylic black paint. Needless to say its not going the best, too thin and the surface feels rough as though it dried too fast, too thick and it orangepeels. After reading through some older posts its seems quite obvious that Tamiya spray cans are the way to go but they are a Laquer, is it safe to spray them over the acrylic paint assuming I let it dry for a week or more? All I want is a nice shiney black paint job, pretty basic.

BTW, I wet sanded out the orange peel and rough areas.

If I were you I'd strip the whole thing before using the rattle can. Since it's acrylic paint I'd guess it would be easy with alcohol.

lacquer ouver acrylic don't seem to work.

but for my experience, it does. So if you wan to try that, go for it. This chart isn't perfect (they say Lacquer goes over nothing beside lacquer, but if you take Alclad pait, they say to use Enamel as base coat or Acrylic)

I am not sure who made up the rules regarding paint. I like to use Model Master acrylic whit primer under lacquer at times because I get excellent coverage but in a very thin layer. Since it comes in little bottles airbrush use is very easy. Aks anyone who uses acrylic paint how hard it is to remove it from an airbrus after it dries and they will tell you that lacquer thinner hardly touches it. Acrylics are almost impossible to get through. In fact a lot of the lacquer sealers and primers are now acrylic. Just test it out and see how it goes. Depending on the brands used there may not be any problem at all.
