Homemade Box

I am gettin ready to build a box for my truck. I was wondering what type of wood / material I should use? Im probly gonna start it right after X-mas. My friend that is helping me is an experienced carpender, and when he asked me what to use... i dident have a clue. Any suggestions?

just my opinion but i would say a pressure treated wood of some sort if you have your heart set on making it out of wood. ever think of aluminum to make it?

I assume that you are talking about a sub box. All the installation shops use MDF (medium dense fiber board) For the best sound quality use 1/2"-3/4" thick and glue all the seams as well as nail/screw them that way they will not rattle. I had 3 JL 12W6 subs in my old 88 full size Jimmy, everything else rattled but the box did not. I was losing screws all over the place. Hit 135.5 db with it once in a competition.

WORD !!!

Do not forget to cut a few two inch holes for the bass to breath.

Hell go to a stero shop and take one apart. See if one has the speaker lose.

It is more than a box. Somethings there are chambers for sound.

Wonder if you could find plans in the internet to make one.

If you lived around Irving,TX you could come by and we could make one.

I have about 300 lb of wood that I am turning on a lathe over the holidays and I need break from that.

I am not allow to spend any more money on the Truck or Jeep so now it is time for wood working.

What kind of box are you wanting? Sub box, tool box, over the rail: If it is going to go in the bed and you want to use wood. Cover the top of the box in diamomd plate, you could even rap in sheet metal.

for sub box definitely MDF. Also when you get the box finished and sealed; go to your local wal-mart (or whatever) and in the craft department they have poly-fil for stuffing pillows use this inside the box to clean up the bass and make it crisp. It works just like acoustic fill and is a lot cheaper.

Yea, its for a sub box. Were gonna do it Sunday morning. Im probly gonna use MDF. Yea, i definetly wanna put something inside to make the bass crisp. I listen to Hardcore/ Metal music and I dont want the bass to drown out everything else like people with systems that play rap or hip-hop. Dont get me wrong, I love hearing that music on a kick ass system, but thats not what I want. So your saying to actually put pillows in the box? Is this like the same affect as putting like a pillow or a blanket in a bass drum? Just wondering.
Its gonna look similar to 03-silverado's box, but i have 10" pioneer subs and im gonna have the amp mounted in the box. Like sort of a cut out tray for it. Ill post some pics when i get everything togeather.

not pillows; just the stuffing. It will definitely crispen the bass; it stops the low frequency sound from resonating in the box. I've got a single 10 that has a dual voice coil and it made a HUGE difference.

good for you bud, get to it! now i agree 100% dont think about it just use MDF 3/4 BOARD also apply some glue to the walls and spread out the cotton fibre fill ,any old lady fabric store has it in bags you can buy also please do this contact the manufacture of the subs you plan on usiong and ask them the dia. of the box they recommend for best quality example if it should be two separate chambers or one. if PORT hole's should be use and also if port tubes should be used what length and dia. of the port, you can use abs plastic pipe for port's eg. 2in port 5in long or 4in port 2in long? also should the speakers face the floor,or the seat or the front? this will determin where the ports will face eg. up,down or forward, for a finishing touch you can wrap it up in carpet use glue to hold it or i've used STONE FLECK PAINT in a spray can it has a textured look once it's dry clear coat it and you'll be happy looks better than carpet! good luck

good advice busta; no one knows the subs specs better than manufacturer and they will usually give you advice as they want you to be pleased with their product.

I just got done building a box for my 1998 siverado ex-cab. I work at a proformance car audio shop and to get the correct air space for the Rockford Foskate P2 10" subs we went with a form fit custum fiberglass box that took about 12 hours with two guys to complete it turned out show room quality and wasnt teribly dificult to complete if your friend does carpentry this shouldnt be too dificult to do for pictures and more detailed instructions you can e-mail me at [email protected]

O" i forgot the "pillow ar stuffing idea" that type of material in a sealed enclosure helps to add needed airspace so if your sub needs 1 qubic foot of air space and the biggest box you can fit is .75 qubic foot you can tune the box by adding a specific mass of non dense material witch slows the sound waves down and makes it think it has the air space it requires. but this type of tuning is not easy and manufacutuers have never helped me out with this. So I recomend never having to do this, and if you do let a pro. tune it for you.
