HELP! 89 bronco 302 upgrade to explorer roller 302 problems

Hi everyone.

Last year I upgraded my 89 302 motor to a 95 explorer ho roller motor. Swapped all the extras out. Wen't fairly smoothly...

However, since then it's just not run properly. For the first 20 miles it runs great as long as I don't turn it off. When I do turn it off and don't let it sit for like 4 hours, it run's horrible like the timing is completely off. Knocks, spits out black smoke after idling for 4 minutes.

All sorts of crap. Anyone have any ideas?

Should I have swapped the cams too? Will the 89 302 cam work with the 95 roller cam?

Help...

Thanks

First of all, what did you swap out? Did you keep the existing intake and injectiong system on the Explorer engine? If so, did you swap out the computer and wiring harness?

If you are keeping the original computer and electrical harness from the 89 Bronco, then you need to take the intake and injection/carburator system off of the old engine and put it on the new one. Additionally you need to make sure you use the old distributor(making sure the teeth count is the same first), or one that will correctly plug into the computer system.

And as far as using the old cam, it defeats the purpose of upgrading to the roller cam engine. The cam in the Explorer engine is designed specifically to work with the "roller" lifters. This causes less wear and the lifters and increases the efficiency of the motor. Which is why they have more power and last longer.

Without more information as to what you did in the swap, any information someone could give you will be vague.
