Gas mileage, is this normal?

What's going on guys, just wanted to get some feedback regarding the gas mileage I'm getting; to put it in short, it's pretty bad.

I fill up about 37 Litres and get about 320 Km (converts to 9.7 gallons and 198 miles respectively) with the gauge not too far from the empty line. It calculates to about 20 MPG.

Is this a normal range or is something possibly wrong? I figured I should be getting higher because 20 does seem quite low and the price of gas is not helping me out one bit. Someone mentioned me utilizing cruise control but I rarely use the highways anymore, if at all.

The car is completely stock, no mods whatsoever and I fill on premium 89 octane. It's a 98 TSI AWD by the way.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Re: Gas mileage, is this normal?

Never put anything lower than 91 octane in your car!!! That would also explain the gas milage... And in fact your gas milage really isnt that bad. For town driving thats probably the most you will see. Always put 91+ octane in, if you cant afford it, you cant afford a turbo car so dont drive it unless you feel like replacing the motor when you melt your pistons!

Re: Gas mileage, is this normal?

Doesn't seem too wierd to me. 20mpg is probably about average for city driving.

Is 89 the highest octane that you can get? Premium here is 93.

91? The silly Mitsu dealers said 89 was perfectly fine to fill on and that the car as it was was filled on 89, what idiots. It has nothing with me no being able to afford 91, I was actually just going by what was told to me. They said as long as I wasn't filling on 87, it wouldn't be a problem as long as I put in 89, but 91 wasn't needed. Unbelievable.

Thanks for the response.

Doesn't higher octane fuel burn faster and cleaner? That's what I have always been told... but there are tons of people around here that are still oblivious to the fact that fuel injection has been invented.

Yeah, a couple chains of gas stations carry the 93 octane, but they are aren't as near to me. The stations I frequent mainly carry 87 (Regular), then 89 and 91.

Re: Gas mileage, is this normal?

the highest here is 91 at all the pumps, unless you want 100 for race gas.

Re: Gas mileage, is this normal?

There's a couple gas stations here with 100 and 104. I've never tried the 104, because its about $5 a gallon. I just seems a little high for not that much of a difference.

Re: Gas mileage, is this normal?

I can only get 91 here, it sucks. I get like 400km to a tank on my 94 usually and I havent exactly been driving it super nice :-)

Re: Gas mileage, is this normal?

94 is the highest i've seen here. to answer somebodys question. higher octane doesnt in itself give more horsepower. the octane rating is what determines how prone to knock it is. basicly higher octane allows you to run more boost before you start knocking and the computer cuts the boost and the timing

It burns slower and cooler so you can boost more without seeing knock and detonation.
