transmission locked out

I cant get the car into gear (out of Park). We replaced the brake switch and it worked for about a week , but now its doing it again. Eventually I get it into gear but it can take anywhere from 2 seconds to 30 minutes with no regular sequence of stepd to make it release. Any ideas ? Its at a repair shop now, not a VW dealer (duh), and I think they are guessing with my nickel. Please help

Usually its just the lock pin solenoid next to the shifter is sticking.
