Amplifier location in a 1991 Explorer

Trying to stick a new deck into my explorer, after the FM modulator went out in the radio. to get it to work, i need to by-pass the amplifier, but the places ive seen amps in cars before, i cant find them. i saw a post on here about a 94, and it says right rear quarterpanel, but i REALLY dont wanna take that off if i dont have to. That post also mentions an access hatch on the inside, but i see that not. Any help?

well im sorry to hear youre putting in a new head unit.. haha i did this for my 96 and it took about 4 hours (without proper tools probably) im assuming yours is in that panel in the passengers rear. thats where mine was and thats where the 94s was (same body style so im assuming same setup) as a matter of fact before you get too far i would suggest an amp integration wiring harness.. this will allow you to just plug in all your old wires to the new HU. itll be about 50 bucks but its worth it.. however, if you can tfind one or dont want to pay for it then expect to take plenty of time for this project

Actually found it, but to get to it, i had to rip out the cubby with the net for storage.
My stupidly brute force way of getting it out was stick a screwdriver in the gap to pull the rim around the storage cubby, and chisel it out.
This did result in my breaking all the clasps that hold it in, however, it was snowing, and i have 20+ hours to drive in the next week, so, i did it anyways.
I THEN had to hold the plastic panel away from the door, while my neighbor put her (much smaller than mine!!) hands in that well, and unplugged the cords going into the top of the amp.
After that, the bypass cable was very easy to install, and the new deck works and sounds very nice. This post is just to help you all out, if you try the same, and are as clueless as i am. Good luck, and happy driving!

I got it in in about 3 hours, but like i said, i busted all the clasps for that little well. Thanks for responding to me. i just found this site and registered to post my first one, and had a responce in just a few minutes. Thanks!

hahah i almost decided to bust out that little cargo net well too.. but instead i wen tthe long way and took most of the screws from the panel off.. then (and i laughed when you said this..) i had my friends shove their arms as far as they could while i pulled the panel as far back as i could.. haha this sucked definately.. but yeah from there its easy.. bypass cable clips right in ans its easy to route it with the other wires up into the dash

Well, now that i busted that thing out.. I guess i get to spend awhile trying to find a way to get it back together, and still hopefully have it be able to be removed.. any advice on that?

I have a 94 X sport, and found a wiring harness at Wally World that uses the existing amp. It is a Scosche brand part# FDK106, and has the proper connectors for the premium sound system. Http://www.scosche.com. It uses the existing wiring and powers the amp as well, so you don't have to bypass the amp. I am using the stock speakers. It cost like $10.
