Had this same problem with my 99....replaced manifold gasket and no more starting/idling problems!! Seems to be a common problem with Explorers! Hope this helped...Lyn

Hi, Does it only want to run if you keep gas peddle pushed down some, and shuts off if you try to let idle? My 99 does it ever so often and I remove the air idle valve on top of intake and spray clean it with carb cleanner or brake cleaner. Then spray some P.B. Blaster in it....Works fine for several months after that. Two screws and a plug to remove to clean it.May be a cheap fix before doing an intake gasket job. Just a thought..Good luck

I just replaced the top & bottom gaskets for the intake manifold; due to a little hard starting, now it runs great! Cost about $80- or so from your local parts store. It just takes a little time to get everything out of the way. Easy job to do though.
