2000 Malibu - Speed Limiter

I was cruisin' along, and I hit 175km/h (109mph) and the gas cut off. I was wondering if it is safe for the engine/tranny if I get the limiter removed. I was also wondering if American Malibus, or different year Malibus had a different limit? Thanks.

My 2000's governer cuts out at 106mph. It kinda pisses me off cause my car is still excelorating when it kills the fuel pump. I honestly don't think it will hurt the engine or the tranny if you remove the limiter/governer. They are mainly put there for safety and insurance issues. After the holidays, I'm getting mine removed, along with my computer being reporgrammed.

You may blow a tire at high speed, anything over the cutout speed will exceed the OEM installed tire speed rating.

well, the tire issue is easily solved. get a higher speed rated tire. for getting your computer reporgrammed, you might have to do some checking around. I was told where to go from the guy who did my exhaust.

Is there any good reason to go 100+?

There was this guy who got pulled over by the Minnesota State Trooper, a few months back, for doing 127mph in a 70mph zone (he made the news) on a fairly straight stretch of highway just northwest of Minneapolis. When the trooper asked him why he was going so fast, his response was this, "To see if my car could." He got off with a speeding ticket, instead of a reckless or careless.

So, there isn't a really good reason to go 100+, other than to see if you and your car can. Besides, you get a bit of a rush doing it.

I have heard of a few cities having "top speed shoot outs." They open a stretch of runway atan airport and let people get out there and see what their vehicles top out at. They are doing this to help keep people from street racing and when you drag race you can't hit your top speed. I have read about a few grand ams supposedly stock with no limiter hitting 130+. The malibu should be around there then seeing theu share the same basic componets and chassis.
