NEED a pair of heads for 89 C1500 305 5.0, what should I get!?!?
Ok I have an 89 C1500 305 5.0 liter (L03 RPO code) and I need a new pair of heads for it. (The 350 I have on order isn't coming soon enough) My shop class this trimester is focused on heads and we are spending 6 weeks grinding, reworking, cleaning, and basically totally rebuilding heads. I am wondering what the best pair of heads would be for my truck that I can just grab at a junkyard and rebuild in my mechanics class. I need them asap so any suggestions would be awesome, thanks guys.

Honestly, if you reallly want more power, just swap in a larger cam. The vortec style heads are actually fairly efficient. You just need more lift and duration.

I apologize. Well, as far as "junkyard heads" go, you are extremely limited. The heads on the 305/350 TBI engines have a different intake bolt pattern than all other 350 heads. (86-earlier) More specifically, the only heads that you could use would be some from another 305 TBI. You could use some off a 350 TBI, but you will need to bore your 305 in order to accomodate for the larger combustion chamber. Keep in mind, however, that grinding (I'm assuming you mean porting and/or polishing the ports) will only help power in the upper RPM range. Usually above 3500 RPM. Also, it has a tendency to actually decrease low end. But it depends on where you want your power. Hope this helps a bit.

its all good. The engine is so over the hill it's not worth boring out, I had a 350 I was going to get but financial issues hindered that. It was mostly for the class I needed them for but it's already half way through heh. Thanks for the help though.
