Anti-theft Alarm System De-arming

Wife's 97 Jimmy has what I think might be the OEM alarm system. It automatically (Without locking the doors) arms itself about 20 - 30 seconds after shutting off the motor. At that time the lights will flash a couple times per design indicating it is armed. Then per design if you open the door or or tap on the truck the lights flash & a remote horn sounds while locking out the starter. To disarm it like normal even though the truck was never locked you have to press the "Unlock" button on the OEM remote. How do you turn off the auto arming feature? I've tried different combinations using the manual door locks to disarm it without success. My 2000 sonoma has instructions in the owners manual for that truck but it doesn't work on the Jimmy. The Jimmy's manual has no instructions for the same alarm. Any & all help would be greatly appreciated.

Its real annoying cause the wife continuously sets off the alarm eveyday & now my parrot has even learned to imitate the alarm. I have pulled the ground wire off the remote horn for the time being.

Re: Anti-theft Alarm System De-arming

Sounds like you have one of the aftermarket add on units that were sold through the GM parts depo. You should take a trip there and see if they can find the model number of the one you have. I know that your remote looks OEM but it isn't. Gm used CodeAlarm then Directed Electronics as their aftermarket keyless/alarm supplier.

I had taken it to the GM dealer about a year ago cause the wife had destroyed the remote She actually killed both of them (long story but she has a habit of stabbing the buttons with a key instead of her finger). Anyhow the dealer provided the replacement remote that was identical to the original. I did ask them to disarm it, but they didin't. I was so aggravated with the dealer at the time that I gave up on letting them work on her jimmy anymore. They want $65 just to look at the "programming". That was after the $100 they charged for the remote and resetting it to work with the car. I know its some kind of combination of locking the car manually at the door with the key on. I actually armed it myself originally by following the instructions for my 2000 Sonoma owner's manual. But it will not disarm per the manual. Maybe there is a switch in the door that ain't workin???

Thanks,
Gene
