Question [Honda techs please] Radio, keyless entry, or both at issue?

Holiday greetings to one and all.

Here's the situation... My wife and I have been having intermittent issues with our 96 Civic LX's keyless entry/starter interrupt and our stock AM/FM stereo.

Keyless entry/starter interrupt symptoms - (Silencer remote ELV777K)
1. reduced or no distance when using remotes. Batteries are both new so it isn't a remote battery issue.
2. intermittent operation or will not open the car even when standing right beside the vehicle.

Radio symptoms - (stock factory AM/FM stereo)
1. Volume adjustment works in reverse or not at all. Sometimes we have can adjust the volume; however most often we have to shut the radio off then start adjusting the volume again because turning the volume down actually increases the volume.
2. All other features appear to be functional. Sound is fine when it works.

The radio sounds fairly straight-forward as in replace the stereo, but I am wondering if the combination of the two issues are related seeing as the keyless entry systems in Hondas are often tied through the stereo system.

I need feedback and fast. Car repair shop wants to charge me big dollars and frankly I feel as if I am getting ripped.

New stereo = way too much
New keyless remote = $100 (again way too much)
Labor = again - OUCH!

Re: [Honda techs please] Radio, keyless entry, or both at issue?

my mom had the same problem with the stock stereo on her 96 lx a few months back. i just pulled it out and threw it away just like the other stock honda/acura stereos I had in the past. Replaced it with my Alpine unit and got her a real alarm system with keyless entry.

With that being said, the reciever for the remote is built into the factory stereo. so they are both crap

I personally hate honda alarms. ive had one crap on my si and the other one on my wife's accord, never even went off when the window was broken, but at least the lights were blinking. do yourself a favor, save yourself $100 for a new remote (by the way, plenty of honda dealerships sell em for $66 programed, whoever is selling it to you for $100 is ripping you off) and go get a real alarm with keyless entry. go pick up one of those aftermarket $100 installed alarm systems with keyless entry at your local stereo shop. They may not be Viper alarms, but, they sure are better than honda alarms.

The keyless and the radio actually DO go hand in hand. The reason being is that there is a control unit that is mounted on top of the radio that works with this system. You may have an issue with it. Without actually being there to test it ... this is just an educated guess.
