2000 jgc wont turn over, battery seems fine ...

We went to the store, turned it off tried to start it 5 minutes later and it would not turn over, battery looks good lights, windows etc... put it in and out of park several times over 15 minutes, still wont budge. Could the starter be bad?

Checked the fuses, the ones with visable tops near the front were all good, the group of larger ones towards the back i dont know how to check. Also there is a
"click" when i turn the key i can barely hear it inside. Its below zero out, we are going to try to tow it to a heated garage nearby, was told the starter may be "frozen"

How do you know the battery is good? Just bc the lights work doesn't mean it has enough juice to turn the engine. I would check your battery (with a tester) and the cables (connections should be tight and free of corrosion) i bet thats your problem-Keep us posted

Re: 2000 jgc wont turn over, battery seems fine ...

put the tranny in NUETRAL and try to start the jeep, sound slike either the NSS is bad or Ignition Switch. if it starts in NUETRAL then the MSS is bad, if doesn not then could be either but I would point more toward the Ignition Switch. and it could be a dead battery or Starter, I doubt that the starter is frozen b/c you said it was only off for 5 minutes.

Re: 2000 jgc wont turn over, battery seems fine ...

We had tried the nuetral start with the same results. A relative got it started by jumping it, drove it to his house and left it on a charger for an hour or two, we tried to start it after that, it would only start if we had the charger on it, the battery guage read the same either way around 12-13, once strted and run for a few minutes it would restart just fine, drove it a mile or so and noticed the brakes felt funny, pulled it in and pumped the brakes got out and checked it, now we seem to have a ruptured rear brake line...... would this cause it to not start? if it read low brake pressure? Looks likes it getting towed to the shop now.

Sounds like the battery is bad and may be frozen by now or will be soon.

Can you remove the cell caps to check the electrolyte??

The other thing is, the alternator should be charging at around 14 to 14.5 volts when the engine is running. If it is only at 12v this might be why the battery has failed.

If you can, put in a new battery or at least a fully charged one and check the charging voltage with a multimeter if you have one.

No I don't think this had anything to do with the jeep not starting.

Re: 2000 jgc wont turn over, battery seems fine ...

We did check levels in the battery, didnt have a multimeter to check the charge . Have to give that a try in the morning, I can borrow one from work before it will be towed off to get the brakes done on it. its my mother in-laws and she just got it two months ago, so the warrenty should cover most of this we hope.
