Question How do I replace the center console light?

The light is out on my '98 Camry's center console. This is the one that indicates Park, Reverse, etc. I can remove the faceplate but can't get the clips loose to actually get to the light bulb.

Anybody know how to get to the light in the center console?

Thanks,
Steve

I don't know the exact procedure but I have been told that it is not so simple. I believe the entire center consol must be taken apart.

Re: Re: How do I replace the center console light?

It looks to me like there are two clips still holding the cover near the front (toward the emergency brake and cup holders). There has got to be a way to release these clips but I tried for awhile again yesterday and can not figure it out. I believe you are right... it is a conspiracy.

Someone on this forum must know how to do it... help?

Thanks,
Steve

Re: How do I replace the center console light?

I figured it out and thought I'd post it for others...

First pop out the top cover and disconnect the wire for the cigarette lighter. Remove the screw in the top left corner. Now the tricky part. There are two clips which still hold the cover in place. They are on each side and towards the front (closest to the emergency brake and cup holder). I used a medium length flat head screwdriver to release the clip. Do this by putting the screwdriver horizontal (the handle is in the area where you disconnected the cigaratte lighter). Using your fingers try to locate the exact point of the clip. Guide the screwdriver to this area and push slightly out at this area while pulling up on the cover. It should release pretty easily if you have the right spot. Do the same on the other side and the cover will release.

Once you've done that just follow the wire to the bulb.

Hopefully this will help someone else out. What a pain.

Steve
