Will the diagnogstics checking show if the transmission is failing? I thought that was just for emissions and engine stuff...

A diagnostics test can tell you if the solenoids are working or not;however not all PCM's tell the complete truth all the time.
So all you can do is run the tests and if all solenoids and sensors are found "Good" then you would assume that the problem is in the Trans.Check all connections anyway and make sure the fluid is full\clean before you start ripping things apart.
