1990 Cherokee: Mystery stalling
Hello all.
I have a very strange problem happening with my '90 Cherokee. The problem is that my Jeep stalls when I try to accelerate from a stop. There are two weird conditions, though: 1. It never stalls when it has first been started (like accelerating from a parking space or driveway) or when it is fully warmed up. It only stalls about 60 seconds from starting it cold until about five minutes when it has been running and fully warmed up. 2. When it stalls, I am unable to restart it. I put the Jeep in park and turn the ignition but nothing happens...and I mean NOTHING. The Jeep won't crank. I'll turn the key, the dash lights come on and that's it. The starter doesn't even make a clicking sound. I'll wait about 30 seconds and then it will restart again. I've been able to succeed by feathering the gas when it starts to hesitate, but it is getting worse. I just don't want to be trapped at an intersection the next time it happens (I've been lucky so far)...most drivers won't be too patient, albeit only 30 seconds. I've swapped out the battery and that made no difference. I figured it may be that because it literally felt as if I was trying to turn the key over with a battery that didn't even supply enough energy to the starter solinoid. 1990 Jeep Cherokee - 4.0L V6 - 4x4 auto Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Regards, Matt |

Re: 1990 Cherokee: Mystery stalling
possibly auto shut down relay, starter relay, when it refuses to start, have some body turn the key to the start position while checking for voltage at the I terminal on the starter relay. If you have battery voltage there, it could be the starter relay.

Re: 1990 Cherokee: Mystery stalling
When you say the running problem only occurs after warmed up it makes me thing you egr valve or egr solenoid. Second part of your problem makes me think of neutral safty switch, turn the key to run, jump the terminals on the starter solenoid and see if it cranks, if it does- I would go with the nss.
