What is a 'rolling stop'?

Generally, most people do not actually come to a full and complete stop at a stop sign, unless they must wait for traffic.
Around my home city, just about everyone will breeze through stop signs at anywhere from a walking pace to a jogging pace, with only a quick glance for oncoming traffic. They just about NEVER stop, unless they actually have to.
So, are these people driving dangerously?
Are they breaking the law?
Should we really stop for stop signs, or is just slowing down and taking a look really safe enough.

What part of stop isn't understood? It's a 4 letter word,and most people can understand 4 letter words. Yes to all of the above questions. If you can't pay the fine or do the time don't do the crime

I think it's safe as long as nobody gets hurt. Plus it's easier on the clutch, because if you stop, then you have to slip it to start running again.

Said very harsh will :P but agreed upon. yes, you have to come to a COMPLETE stop for stop signs (wierd huh? ) I don't think its dangerous, but not as safe as coming to a complete stop, if you start rolling through a stop sign, you are likely to be moving your foot from brake pedal to accelerator. Now if you see something you didn't previously see, you have to move your foot back over to the brake. I would say keep with the stop signs, I'll slow down if its really late at night at intersections I'm familiar with. If its day time or in an area I am unfamliar with, I generally come to a complete stop.

Point well taken RandomTask. But it's really a stupid question. Ignorance I can deal with but stupidity is another matter. Look at the 'less wear on the clutch' reasoning. How important is the wear on the clutch if the car is smashed up. LOL

there was actually a law suit about this. A man claimed that the word STOP was not clear on the meaning. His argument was something like... STOP could mean, stop going so fast... or something stupid along those lines. Sometimes I stop at a stop sign just because I feel like it, other times I really see no need to bring the car to a complete stop and wait THREE seconds which IS the law as well, and then start moving again. Most times I just slow down to about idle speed for a couple seconds with my foot on the brake as I am looking back and forth. If there is no chance in hell of any car possibly by any means hitting you, why should you really have to stop? Theres a very THICK line between "not stopping because if you stop you wont have time to make it in front of the approaching traffic", and then using good judgement and realizing that "its totally safe to just cruise on through". of course never cruise through a stop sign if you havent looked for cops. good judgement or not, its a law... so if you cant do the time, then dont do the crime without looking for cops.

Many STOP signs should be YIELD signs. The majority of driving rules are simply dummed downed to accommodate the worst driver ever to get behind the wheel.

This is because the "worst driver out there" can kill you! Yes I know how cool you are (we all are) and that bad things only happen to other people who are stupid. But any 80 year old lady with a Buick can go 100 mph. The police and civil engineers do not have the time to explain EVERY detail and reason about Every stop sign to EVERY driver. So, plaese stop.

I received a ticket in my hometown when I did not come to a complete stop at a stop sign.

I now own $110.00 worth of that sign.

Now I got into the habit of always come to a complete stop and look both ways before I go again.

Yeup, STOP means stop. Besides, a "rolling stop" can mean several things. I've seen cops set up to bag people who blow stop signs in residential neighbourhoods (they're there because enough residents have complained) and not care about 2-5 kph rolling stops. But thats really slow, and they're looking for the people who fly right through doing one-third the speed limit.

Yield signs are a very good point - but you gotta think how bad some peoples driving skills are, as well as how poor YOUR driving skills become when you're in a hurry. Its all about bad driving habbits. You start doing little rolls at stops for long enough they're gonna get worse (especially when you're in a rush!). And I'm no angel preacher here - moving stop violations probably outnumber all the other charges I've recieved so far in my life.

The WORST(and most!) are the ones a block from your fucking house!!!

about the clutch thing...i can basically come to a complete stop in my car without puttin in the clutch, as long as i can go again right away. I dont stop long, only like a split second, and i only do it when there aren't any other cars around, but i can do it...btw i drive a 89 Maxima SE (5-speed). No, my car doesn't even want to stall when i do it.

What's funny is one time i heard of a person that actually came to a complete stop while they were driving for driver's ed and a cop pulled her over just to say that she is like the only person he'd ever seen to actually come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Scared the shyt out of her, too...lmao
