Uh oh.
The '05 GTO has 100 more hp than the new Mustang, but the Mustang is beating the pants off the GTO in sales.

Even Car and Driver (Jan, '05) liked the Mustang better (just by a tiny bit) even though it was slightly slower.
For them, the Mustang was $5000 cheaper, had a better shifter and looked better.
Personally, I like the GTO better, but if sales don't pick up, GM will pull the plug on the GTO. Then, it won't matter how much faster the GTO is.

The arch-type GTO buyer is not concerned with what other people perceive them as, when driving the car. They are much more interested in what the dash, the hood, the seat and steering wheel are like.
Had a friend recently relate a story about his $80K Porsche. He felt he was driving it for everyone else to enjoy. He didn't like the dash, nor the squirrely handling and race-car like performance. He wanted something to DRIVE, not to show off in. He traded it in for a GTO. He's not quite as quick, but having a lot more fun!

I see the Mustang as the same thing. People are buying it for what it LOOKS like from the outside.
Pontiac has recognized this problem, and has cut back their sales goals and production, to avoid the necessity of giving up. They've also knuckled under a bit, to marketing, by adding scoops and a bigger wing. We'll probably see some stripes, too. I hope they keep it tasteful and respectable, like a true pedigree should show.

this is my opinion of course,i think the new mustang is a bad representation of what you saw in the past,and i believe it is on official raping of a once good design,and turning it into some cheap looking plastic hand me down sh*t.Does ford really think its cool to take sombody elses work of art,and change it around to suit sales?Or can they not come up with somthing better than a old played out body style.(i can already hear the hate mail).....Its just like every other ford in one respect,its a POS and its going to fall apart.

You know, it seems retro is the new trend in car design...first the PT Cruiser, then the Crossfire and the Prowler, now the Mustang. I like my cars sleek and modern lookin...but thats just me. And the GTO really does need some dressing up, I think it would look badass with maybe a WS6 style hood or somesuch. Just my

My biggest problem with the Mustang is the interior. So iin addition to being slow, its cramped inside too. Im 5'5" and I feel like a giant in there. God knows how the rest of the average heighted world feels in the thing.

I dislike the dash and the interior in general in the 05 stang, it's just too bland and booring looking. And I don't like the taillights either. I sat behind one and when the guy hit his breaks the taillights looked pinkish.

the old mustangs are way cooler.They should have picked some other engine than a 4.6 v-8 for the new one.My sunday car has a 4.6..Its not slow,but that dont make it fast.Is it true they stuck a 5 speed in the new tangs.I sat in one but i was so shocked at the dash and bright red seats,that i completely forgot to look at the shifter

yeah i have a 4.6 intercepter in my 97' crown vic,with a few mods....Almost all 4.6's start burning oil and knocking within 50 thousand miles.4.6's are not a bad engine but it will never have the potential a 5.7 or a 6.0 chevy has.And he made a comment that the GTO is an aussie car,but failed to mention GM owns tha Chevy side of Holden.
