Re: Help with a new Distributor
The 2 wires coming out of that one hook directly into the MSD box. You'll probably have to buy an extension cord from MSD unless you want to cut the connectors off both wires and splice them. Your 6a box should have a corrosponding connector on it.
As for all the rest of the wires, here is a short summary, stoled directly from MSD's site(http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/6series.pdf, page 5): Power Leads These are the two heavy gauge wires (12 gauge) and are responsible for getting direct battery voltage to the Ignition. The ignition has an internal fuse so no fuse is necessary. Heavy Red: This wire connects directly to the battery positive (+) terminal or to a positive battery junction or the positive side of the starter solenoid. Note: Never connect to the alternator. Heavy Black: This wire connects to a good ground, either at the battery negative (-) terminal or to the engine. Red: Connects to a switched 12 volt source. Such as the ignition key or switch. Orange: Connects to the positive (+) terminal of the coil. This is the only wire that makes electrical contact with the coil positive terminal. Black: Connects to the negative (-) terminal of the coil. This is the only wire that makes electrical contact with the coil negative terminal. Trigger Wires: There are two circuits that can be used to trigger the MSD Ignition; a Points circuit (White wire) and a Magnetic Pickup circuit (Violet and Green wires). The two circuits will never be used together. White: This wire is used to connect to the points, electronic ignition amplifier output or to the Yellow wire of an MSD Timing Accessory. When this wire is used, the Magnetic Pickup connector is not used. Violet and Green(Magnetic Pickup Connector): These wires are routed together in one harness to form the Magnetic Pickup connector. The connector plugs directly into an MSD Distributor or Crank Trigger. It will also connect to factory magnetic pickups or other aftermarket pickups. The Violet wire is positive (+) and the Green is negative (-). When these wires are used, the White wire is not. |

Re: Help with a new Distributor
actually, he's referring to the wiring for the TFI unit, which doesn't exist on the distributor he got. in a stock 5.0 mustang, the computer controls the timing advance curve. i'm pretty sure some mods would be needed to make it work... i'm fairly sure if he plugged the dist he has into his MSD it wouldn't fire.
the MSD dist i have has a TFI unit on it, so no modifications were necessary. in order to use that dist you have you'll have to find a way to re-wire the dist wiring in your car to bypass it, so that you can utilize the magnatic pickup and mechanical advance your dist is equipped with. and there, i can't help you.

Re: Help with a new Distributor
Aaaah you're right. My bad. You guys should divide this forum into carb and efi, i'm constantly getting confused... But if the computer will still fire the correct fuel without the TFI input, it should still run.. The msd box, that msd-ripoff dizzy, and a coil will provide spark on their own. I don't know a lot about ford EFI, so I don't know what'll work or not.. but I do know that'll provide spark. Thats exactly what I'm running on my motor right now. MSD Blaster coil, MSD billit dizzy, MSD 6al box.

Re: Help with a new Distributor
my ignition is all MSD except for the controller, and that's next... going with a digital-6+, since it's such a flexible and all-in-one controller.

Re: Help with a new Distributor
different distributor would be a direct bolt-in... you're looking for one for an 86-93 5.0 EFI mustang. i dont' know how you'd re-wire the car to use the dist you have now.

Re: Help with a new Distributor
It probably won't start. Your car's computer needs a tach signal to know how fast the motor is spinning so it can calculate how much fuel/when it should be injecting. At least one of the wires that goes to your old dist gives the computer this info. There is probably a way you can get this signal to the computer using the MSD's tach output, if you know which wire it is.
