I believe that you can get a regulator cable at a Ford Dealership. As for installing you have to take off the doorpad of course, and from there I believe it is basically just putting the new one in where the old one came off. I used to have a Jeep and I had to replace one. It didn't take too long, just kind of annoying to put in. good Luck

Re: 1991 ford 4 door explorer rear window regulator cable

I'm a GM guy that happens to own a 94 ford Explorer and a 96 Blazer. Thankfully they have both been pretty good vehicles for me. Yeah good luck with that regulator cable. If it is covered under that recall thats an easy fix. If not plan to be in the bowels of the door for a few hours.

Unfortunately I just had to go through a similar process for the rear window. The window has to come completely out before the regulator and other hardware can be removed. To do this, there are two 1/4" rivets bottom of the window that attaches the window to the slide mechanism. These have to be drilled out. (pop out center stud with a punch first, makes it a lot easier) Then the window can be lifted out from the top, of course the window channel has to be pulled out of the way. Then there are about 5 more rivets and 2 nuts holding the regulator assembly. Same process, knock out centers, drill out rivets and carefully remove after unplugging regulator wiring. Replace regulator, and reverse the process using new rivets to attach all hardware and window back in original locations. Have fun. Helps to have an extra hand when you are ready to pop in new rivets to hold things in proper location and make sure things are tight against locating features.
