where do you guys get your money?
this might sound like a silly question, but where does everybody get their money (and time) to modify their cars? i know that some people are older and have full time jobs, but i am in college, and with my cars and insurance and everything. i make quite a bit of money during the summer but it can only get me so far once i go to school full time and don't work. so does everybody buy on credit, or just have more money than me (and maybe less cars) or what? i would like to get a body kit for my new accord but i just don't have the money unless i use a credit card, but that stuff makes me nervous. i just see some people with lots and lots of money in their cars with engine swaps and stuff and i just don't know how they afford it with normal living expenses. just curious, thanks thomas crown

i work full time and only have mostly cheap mods on my car. i wouldn't put anything on your credit card unless you can cut a check to pay it off when the next statement comes in. this is just common sense and good practice so you don't get in over your head.
i've had many friends who put thousands of $$$ worth of car stuff on their cards just to be payin' for the shit over the next five years. is it really worth it??? we always had credit card companies on campus when i was in school and they'd always push and push, giving away free stuff...just don't get caught up in it all. since you know the cost of what you want, just start saving for it and in a couple years, you'll have enough to buy it.

When I was in school, I was in the same boat. I'd make enough in the summer to pay the difference between the scholorships and the cost of the education. So there was no modding for me. Now that I've been out and working for the last decade or so, I can swing playing with the toys and not going into hock for it.

I'm a full time university student. I only do mods that I can afford after paying tuition, food, apartment rent, etc...

Well I work part time (but I get full time job like shifts) and barely make any $. Most of it goes to my DSL connection. I sometimes have a hard time to save...like now. I had $784 in my account and my first month of DSL was $413, and then now I am getting alignment and oil change today for my car which will cost $90 and then plus i am getting a headunit for about $200 (but my friend is hooking me up with his 40-45 % discount).
I am just modding my car slowly and then when I think its enough, I need to start saving for future needs. I would advise you to save for a year or two and then when you got some $, start modding.

6bucks an hour???? where does everyone live? is the cost of living alot lower everywhere else. i live in CA and minimum wage is probably around 7 now. i work in some little grocery store called trader joes just doing normal simple shit, and i get 11/hr. but i still dont have any money for what i want. but maybe im setting my goals too high.
i already have the basics:cai, muffler, intake, strut bar, nice rims w/avid's. and you cant forget the all too necessary sound system. but now im lookin at some dc 4-2-1 headers, aem pulleys, highflow cat, and for visuals the carbonfiber altezzas. those things arent going to put me a couple grand back like the h22 that im "wishing" for. but even so, an extra couple hundred isnt the easiest thing to find now. especially with school, rent, and insurance. so im in the same boat with alot of you, just gotta save. good luck with all your automotive dreams |

hard come, easy go
i work my a$$ off(2nd shift) and go to class during the day. just figure what you want most and save. people dont understand how i've got all this other stuff and no tint windows or subs in the trunk, it all comes in due time :sun:
really helps to do alot of shopping around b4 you buy something, its crazy the difference in prices from one store to the other, i've seen diffs up to $300 for the same exact headlights.

lie, cheat and steal...
its the only way to pay for anything! Deal drugs if you want more money... not that I condone such actions.
I deliver pizzas actually. 15 an hour (average) aint bad, but I only work like 4 hours a day...

cheap upgrades
I am retired, but I am AMAZED at the low prices I get things for on EBAY and locally (Detroit area). EVEN the ground effects and installation were VERY affordable. I TOO see people putting $1000's into their cars.......you would NOT believe the things I get at a discount. E-mail me direct with questions, but procarparts seems a good source.
