Just got Sirius Radio

my parents went out and got me Sirius Satellite radio as an early Xmas present. it's nice. the unit i got has an FM transmitter built in so you just tune your car stereo to like 89.1 or something and the unit transmits through the radio wirelessly. all you need is to hook up the antenna and a cigarette lighter adapter. As far as the stations go i'm pretty pleased. i've been listening to mostly Shade 45 which is owned by Eminem, they play uncesnsored commercial free hip hop all day long, which is awesome, recentlythey've been playing a lot of songs off the new Pac CD and the DJ Green Lanter mixtapes.
they also have Octane radio which is a good metal station. they were playing Candiria, Metallica, and of course Pantera in response to the recent tragedy. They have 120 different stations and 65 of them are commercial free, it's way better than am/fm radio. another nice feature is that you can listen to sirius radio by logging onto their web page and they'll let you listen to streaming sirius radio via the computer, if you want. I think satellite radio is going to put regular am/fm out of use in the next few years, it's really that much better. does anyone else have sirius or XM or something comparable?

Re: Just got Sirius Radio

Sounds cool. I'm all for satellite radio. Its one of the few places where the FCC has no control. Howard Stern is planning on moving his show to satellite radio once his contract is up in 2005.

Re: Just got Sirius Radio

it was $100 for the unit and $50 for a mouning kit. they give you a $30 mail in rebate if you get both. i got this one: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-1wT8g1b....asp?I=612XTR1 and i ordered the vehicle kit for $50 from the same web page.

service is $12/month. if you sign up for a year you get a month for free, 2 years=3 free months, or you can get a monthly subscription.

Re: Just got Sirius Radio

I don't much like radio, I listen to whatever I want when I want to.

Doesn't Sat radio stream at near CD quality? Then what's the point of transmitting it over a radio frequency?

true, i never thought of that. it's still significantly better quality than regular radio. you think i'd get better sound if i hard wired the unit into my stereo?

So every SIRIUS channel of satellite radio, over 120 of them, is available throughout the continental US with crisp digital-quality sound all down the line. You just can't find radio like this on any other dial.
It's the same for iPods, those FM transmitters may sound good due to them being a foot away from the receiving radio, but you're still losing lots of quality. If you can spare the money, I say hard wire it.
