Question Floor pan purchase and rear fender

1. I am about to start a major project on my 71 SB conv. It definetly needs floor pans (as it looks like a flintstone car in places). Need to know what gauge of steel is best and who sells them, should I go whole or halfs( I need both in my case)?

2. As this same vehicle (71SB) is missing a rear fender, I noticed that it has a metal casing that the rear lamp sits in. Is this generally part of the fender or the light? Does it come with fender purchases or need to be found seperately? Any information and knowledge is appreciated.

Re: Floor pan purchase and rear fender

The most you can get is one full side, which some call a half pan. Some call a half pan (others call it a quarter) only the front or rear half of a full, one side pan. Confused? Most have pictures of what they're selling. If you have rust in the rear where the battery sits & back seat passenger floorboard & it goes all the way to the front floorboard then you need a full pan section. This is the same for driver & passenger sides. Stay away from the cheapo sections made in China, the better ones are made in Europe, Dansk (Norwegian) is one good company. The fender only includes the sheet metal. The metal tail light parts must be found seperately.

Best gauge pans can be found at Wolfsburg West.

Much heavier than most parts joints sell.

Floor pan purchase

I get most of my VW parts from California Imports. http://www2.cip1.com/
A friend of mine got a pair of floor pans for his 63 Beetle and they are of very good quality. You will find alot of the VW restoration vendors all get their sheet metal from the same supliers, so it's just a mater of finding the least expensive vendor. If you are in the states than you will have alot more choices then here in canada.
