I need help plz. VSS gear & shaft in tranny

I believe it happened some time yesterday evening. My speedo wouldn't work so i checked my VSS and whadaya know the red gear and the shaft it connects to broke off in my tranny, I think. I don't know where else they could be, but I put my finger in there to see if I could feel it and nothing I also put a flexible magnet in there nothing. I plan on draining the fluid and see what is going on in there.

Has this happened to anybody else? Is it from peeling out? Will the plastic gear hurt my tranny? I'm quite sure the metal shaft will. I've been driving it since last night and no problems YET.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

my speedo gear i think is worn down, at freeway speeds it reads about 20-25 mph.

I've been driving my car like an idiot (like normal i mean) and nothing yet so I am still waiting for it to seize up or just fail.
