Question 92 GTI gas tank needed

Anyone out there know where I might be able to obtain a gas tank for a '92 VW GTI? It's a 2.0 liter 16v, the last year of the Golf II's and I understand that all the Golf II's share the same gas tank (Golf and GTI's from '85 - '92).

Apparently the tank is manufactured in 2 pieces and some kind of sealant in the seam holds it together, and it now has a sizeable (and growing) crack there. My local VW dealer/shop has been unable to procure a replacement anywhere and hasn't been able to patch it successfully either.

They've also told me that standard practice for a wrecking yard is to hole the gas tank to drain out the fuel for safety reasons, so that's been a dead end also.

Any help would be appreciated

Try this link:

They showed one place in Hawaii. It's Hilo Auto Recycling @ 1-888909-4456 for $75. Note the site lists all models that are compatible.

Wow! Thanks a lot for the tip! They are double checking right now, but it looks like they've got one. My GTI has been down for 3 months looking for a fuel tank, and it will be great to get it back on the road.
