Unhappy TT a 71 240z?

First off, i have been in AF for a while but im new to the Z, especially the old ones. So, sorry if i offened anyone.

I've been lookin at a lot of 71 240z around my neighborhood, and i was thinking. Is it possible to drop a VG30DETT into a 71 240Z? I think so because the stock L24 looks longer than the VG30, so the VG30 can just slip in there.

This isnt a bogus thread, please answer.

Re: TT a 71 240z?

Haha

It's fine to ask questions buddy. And to answer your question, sure, anything is possible. But I would seriously recomend an RB series engine. Such as an RB20DET, that thing would seriously haul ass.

Plus, VG engines arent exactly the easiest thing in the world to work on... RB's are actually quite easier to work on, and the power gains are just as substantial with a little work.

It would also slide in nicely.

You may want to PM Redneck383... He has an SR20DET in his S30 240Zed, I believe he said it was about $5,000 in parts and labor in the powertrain swap alone, but ask him, its well worth it

If you have any more questions, ask away!

Re: TT a 71 240z?

Man ur like the coolest one here. I heard RB motors are way more expensive than SR20. Since the car is in 1971....there should'nt be any problem with smog in Ca? Right?

Re: TT a 71 240z?

Ooo... Not entirely sure. Might want to check with Redneck383, he is in CA as well... He is really a good guy to talk to about this stuff, hes big into it.

And thanks for the compliment, haha

My buddies company used to sell RB20DET clips as low as $2,150, and SR20DET's were up there, because of the whole cliche drift thing lately. Companies could basically charge how ever much they wanted... And people pay it.

I may be able to get him to import you one if your interested... We'll see if hes still in at all.

Re: TT a 71 240z?

Well sure... RB20DET is factory rated at about 220bhp, RB25DET is rated at 260bhp, and RB26DETT is rated at 276+bhp.

RB26DETT is where your getting into some complex shit though... But it is possible. You would have to get a BNR32's RB26DETT engine (1989-1993) and get an ECR33's RB25DET transmission. The two fit together perfectly, but only those two combinations will work, otherwise the clutch initiation is different.

... But dude, do you really feel like getting into all of that fabrication work? Ewww

I would say RB25DET would be the highest you would want to go... Otherwise your heading into some 'Monster Garage' project

But keep in mind... The R32 that you would be getting the RB20DET out of, will have weighed MUCH more than your 240Zed... The power to weight ratio on that RB20DET powered S30 would be INSANE... I say go for that, cheaper, and easier by far.

... But its up to you.

Do RB20 and 25 motors have more hp than a VG30?

VG30DETT is factory rated USDM (United States Domestic Market) at 300bhp. In other words, the United States version has 300bhp (Brake Horse Power... Or at the wheels)

VG30DETT JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) is factory rated at 276bhp due to smaller turbos. But smaller turbos means less lag, thus a quicker car...

But anyways, no, RB20DET and RB25DET have less Horse Power than VG30DETT... But RB engines are much more efficient and easier to work on... Which is a plus, believe me.

I still think an RB series motor would be better for this project.

Re: TT a 71 240z?

Which engine has the most potential- an RB20, RB25, or a VG30?

Potential is only limited by cash flow. Of the three, the VG30 has the most potential for max power. For your project, the RB (either 20 or 25, in my mind just go for the extra displacement of the RB25 for not much more money) would probably be a better fit.

Also, the USDM version of the VG30 did not make 300hp at the wheels. It made 300hp at the crank. 300bhp often refers to base horse power, aka what the engine makes before drive train losses. But 300hp at the wheels with a VG30 is as easy as a minor intake and exhaust tweak and uping the boost to about 14 psi.

Perhaps the best answer to your questions is another question:

What are you looking to do with this car?

Re: TT a 71 240z?

Damn... I just relized that I was completely wrong about that. I knew bhp was at the crank... Why the hell didnt I say that

God I must be losing it fella's...

And I agree, and RB engine would be better for this project.

Re: TT a 71 240z?

I want to make it a daily driver with good hp. I kno that in CA that cars older than 1976 dont have to be smogged.
