What timing belt???

O.K., sorry if I've drug up an old topic, but I'm a newbie after all.

I've read that when you purchase a used Z31, one of the first things you should do is change the timing belt. First of all,.....WHY? Second, is there any such thing as a heavy duty or "racing" type belt, and should I install one of those?

Thanks!

Re: What timing belt???

You should always change the timing belt if you want to keep your car running good, you could seize the engine if you dont change it, depends on your milage, im not sure of when you should change it on a Z31, i know its 60,000 miles for a Z32 i believe.

Re: What timing belt???

Ooooo StageWon... Get with it buddy

Change your timing belt as much as you can (within reason). Because that, and that little peice of composite is the only thing keeping your interference engine from letting the pistons meet the valves... In a bad... Blown engine... Type of way.

That was the culprit with my first Zed... The owner didnt find it important to change the timing belt... Not at 60,000... Not at 70,000... Hell... Not even at 100,000miles. He waited until 104,000miles, and the thing just popped.

I had to tear the engine down to bare block (with pistons intact, they were fine luckily) and if any of you know the normal condition of a '90 Zed's engine bay... Its not pretty.

Every vaccum hose, every fuel line, every water hose was dry rotted, and had to be replaced due to the break down. Fuel Dampener just fell apart when I took it off, all the gaskets from the upper/lower plenum gasket, to the head gaskets, were completely useless to seal anything.

I had to replace EVERYTHING in that damn engine. Sent the heads out to get re-machined, sent the car to a shop and had the timing adjusted, and timing belt fitted. Did the well over due 60k Maintence, replaced the EFI Harness, Injectors, and fuel rail... And after all of that, she glided.

But all of that because of some jackass owner didnt want to take care of his beautiful car.

... So to answer your question... Get it changed, and yes they do.

Re: What timing belt???

yes, change timing belts quite a bit. i don't know if they make a stronger one for the zed31, but i know they do for the zed32. like zedex said, it is just that 1.5" wide and .25" thick piece of belt that is keeping the valves from hitting the pistons. crazy.

Re: What timing belt???

Like Jared said, they do make a racing timing belt made out of Carbon Fiber/ Kevlar Fiber that will last 30% longer I believe. It is around $135.

And like Jared also said... Im also, not entirely sure if they make one for the Zed31. But I have an idea.

Super secret website for finding everything you need for your Zed car

Sold it after it started having minor problem after minor problem... It just turned into too much to handle for a kid (At the time). So, sad to say, I had to let her go to another Zed Aficionado a few towns over. Last I heard he had her fully restored, and with a '93s powertrain in her, in order to avoid the early years problems. So shes in good hands.

My second Zed, the black 1992 2seater, I sold to a college kid that made an offer I couldnt refuse.

Then came my last one... Which I had for a few weeks when I relized it was going to be another 'First Zed' so I just slapped it on some poor guy in South Carolina for $2,000. Which is what I bought it for, so no big deal. It was going to be my road course car, but once again, too much too take on at the time.

... Then came the Shitvic... I mean Civic... God I hate to say it... Its a fun car
