dpfi/mpfi d15 any !HELP! appreciated

Currently:

This is the problems I am in, its a canadian 1990 civic dx with i/h/e/nology wires/newplugs/cap and rotor and a top end slipping clutch. The car gives off a STRONG gas odor and alot of black smoke, there is also soot on the muffler. I believe I have mpfi and a si ecu(which may explain why I have a check engine light on), but every1 tells me dx's have dpfi. Heres why I believe mpfi: the guy b4 me had a si engine (D16) in the car, i think he didnt change the ecu or mpfi on my car when he re-swapped in the d15. MY battery dies VERY fast and i think its cuz of a rigged up tachometer. ALSO my friend owns a stock crx with a rebuilt d15 and a GOOD clutch and his car feels way better than mine and he only has two injectors.

Here are my questions:
1. How can I tell the mpfi vs the dpfi apart.
2. How can I tell the dx ecu apart from the si ecu?
3. Why does my car run so rich?
4. Why and how can i fix the "check engine light"?
5. My tachometer stays on after i turn the car off and it may suck up my battery is this true?
6. Does the mpfi and si ecu on my dx engine make less hp than a dpfi dx ecu?
7. How can i fix the gas ordor and the black smoke?
8. did my comments and question confuse any one ?

please email and thing relavant to this to [email protected]

comments suggestions help or hate mail will be read

DPFI looks black, kind of rounded, says DPFI on the cover. MPFI says MPFI, it's a lot bigger, metal, there is a lot more plastic on the DPFI. They look a LOT different. Try looking both up on Ebaymotors.com..you will see pictures. You can look up the ECU model number online or post it here. Your ecu is located under the carpeting on the passenger side. Also, if you have MPFI you need an SI ecu, if you have DPFI you need the DPFI ECU..you can't mix and match these. Also if you have MPFI you need to make sure that you have a Injector Resistor Box. But first things first..verify if your DPFI or MPFI..then we will know what's wrong.

After you find out what you got (DPFI or MPFI) then pull back the capet on the passenger side footwell and look at how many times your ecu blinks. Tell us how many times and we can tell you whats wrong.

2. How can I tell the dx ecu apart from the si ecu?
A mpfi ecu will have a sticker on one of the sides with a number on it saying something like xxxxx-pm6-xxxx and a dpfi will have a xxxxx-pm5-xxxx. You cannot run a dpfi with a mpfi computer and vice versa.

5. My tachometer stays on after i turn the car off and it may suck up my battery is this true?
mabey but i've never seen anyone hook up a tach that stupidly before. it should be hooked up to a power wire on the ignition or somewhere.

6. Does the mpfi and si ecu on my dx engine make less hp than a dpfi dx ecu?
Hell no!!!! a mpfi on a dx engine will kill a true dx anyday.

3. Why does my car run so rich?
4. Why and how can i fix the "check engine light"?
7. How can i fix the gas ordor and the black smoke?
there is no quick answer for these. sorry. mabey 02 sensor, blown head gasket?

Re: dpfi/mpfi d15 any !HELP! appreciated

We have a pm6 ecu after all. So How is it that we have 4 injectors instead of 2 ?; is this causing us to run RICH????. We will be taking the tach off of the car today and also post after.

Re: dpfi/mpfi d15 any !HELP! appreciated

What does it mean when my ecu blinkes 10 times?
WE uninstalled the tachometer it had 4 wires: red, green, white & black, the green one was spliced into the DIST cap?? (i dunno if its the dist cap)(i believe that this is where the tach read the RPM's from). The red wire was installed with another red wire into a the fuse box(i dunno where the other red wire came from maybe it was the white wire). Finally the black wire was just hangin there and I yanked it out. POST your reply

if it is still on the harness hook it up to your air intake tube close to your throttle boby. it it was cut off you would most likely have a check engine light. follow the harness and you might find it. thats why i wouldnt buy a modded car or let someone do the work. most people get lazy or cheap and do it half ass

btw this therad is pretty old you should have just started a new one...
