idles rough then dies 97 z34

This just happened to me today. I was driving down the road and was going to set my cruise. Wouldn't work, then my radio lights went off. Pulled up to a stop sign and the engine was surging, then died. Wouldn't start back up. Few hour later, went back to it, started cruise worked. Slow down to about 25 mph and engine starts surging again, dies. Anyone know what could be wrong? It only has 82,000 miles on it.

i was also driving and the same thing happens to me. The only thing that didnt happen was that i didnt lose my stereo lights and it didnt take an hour to get it to start back up. When i turn the wheel and then turn it back it makes a loud clicking noise. I cant figure that out either. My car has 134,000 miles on it. It is a 1995 monte carlo Z34. My 97 monte was doing a similar thing and it ended up being my alternator. It was going in and out causing my car to die and things to shut off, but my battery was still good, so sometimes it would start fine. I would go to autozone and have them test your battery and your alternator. It might be something totally different, but its worth a try and its free.

Funny how all the '96 Z34s seem to be already crushed. I have such great luck. My '96 had the same thing at 20K miles; was the alternator.

(Then the computer went 3 times, then the head, then a cylinder got stuck. Then the trannie gave up the ghost. Similar stories abound. Ditched that death trap before 25K.)
