Connections between 91 and 04 Iraq wars
In another thread, we were getting off topic about the connections, how Saddam wasn't adhering to the 91 cease fire agreements, and therefore the 91 war never technically ended [and that Bush might have better used this argument for war, and that his speeches about WMD were fed by intelligence he'd received].
The discussion also ranged to how the 91 war started. Iraq invaded Kuwait, sure, but the point was brought up that Kuwait was using angled drilling techniques to take oil from below Iraq. Anyone have good information about the precursors to the Iraq/Kuwait war? |

Likely not! I've piqued my interest though, so may do some research to check on it.

Re: Connections between 91 and 04 Iraq wars
well, Iraq had definately been accusing Kuwait for a while about stealing up to 300,000 barrels of oil a day.
i have read but can't find much now. US (presume oil co. but could be gov.) supplied directional drilling equip. Sadam applied to US to help stop Kuwait and they replied with "the US has no interest in the oil region" so he eventually sent 100,000 troops into kuwait. if i find anything on the above 2 points i'll give you some links.

Re: Connections between 91 and 04 Iraq wars
Good article. Shows that Saddam was a continuing problem, even after the 91 war. Any info on what happened before the war, Flatrater?

You have to know that originally Kuwait was a province of Iraq, separated by the British and later dominated by the US, and that the sovereignty of Kuwait has always been in dispute.
Here is a good place to start. Iraq and Kuwait Here are a couple of interesting links concerning disinformation campaigns during the 1991 buildup and war. The babies thrown on the floor Who set the oil wells ablaze? The faked satellite pics and Iraqi buildup on the Saudi border You may or may not like those sources, but they should provide enough info to help you construct searches - leading to other sources you might feel more comfortable with. I find this one really good as an overview which shows how issues fit together and provides some good history. http://www.globalissues.org Enjoy

Re: Connections between 91 and 04 Iraq wars
the one thing that they both have in common is that a country in the middle East was invaded by a stronger assailant for historical reasons. In the case of Kuwait, the good guys rallied around and put the bad guy in his place. In the case of Iraq, the good guys are conspicuous by their absence.

OK!
This one is somewhat compulsory reading because it was used as a pre-text for both wars. The Gassing of the Kurds at Halabja
