putting into gear

This has happened to me several times now, after starting my car, I cannot push in the button to put the vehicle into drive. I took it to the dealer, but they just said that I must not be pushing in the brake hard enough. I've been driving for many years and I know how to push in the brake when I put the vehicle into drive. Has anybody else had this problem?

Hasn't happened to ours yet as you describe problem 'can't push button in' , but have heard of it. Do you have to shut off and restart it to get it to work, or use the 'Shift Lock Release' procedure in manual ?
This could be a BCM issue, it has happened on some 2003 and 2004 Teks, and there is a new part available to correct. Still under warranty?

I am still under warranty. I usually shut the car off then turn it back on and it works fine. More annoying than anything. The dealership just made me feel so stupid for not being able to put my car into gear. Glad to know that there may be a fix. Thank you.

Re: putting into gear

I can certainly understand your feelings about dealer response, but in defense of them, I'm sure they get many conplaints about general problem description I:E: can't move shifter out of park, and very often it can be due to driver error. In your case, its an electrical thing specific to your vehicle and takes a little more digging to get the answer. Hope you can get it resolved easily.

The bcm doesn't really care if you shift into gear or not.

Sounds like a problem with the shifter, or the shift release btsi (brake transmission shift interlock).

Re: putting into gear

Dragula, Normally I would agree, but in the case of this particular vehicle and year there is this for shift lever interlock:

Re: putting into gear

This happened to me and the dealer said that it is something in the shifter bt it can not be fixed until it won't come out of gear at all even after turning it off.
