Header for a Civic CX Hatch 1997

Hello,
I am totally confused when it comes to header for my car.
I wanna get one off of EBay, but I dont know.
If I put a header on, I know I will have to take the cat off b/c its attached to stock manifold. So what happens next, do I get fined for no cat or does check engine lights come on?
What I am asking
what kind of header do I buy (what one for civic) and what do I do about the cat?
Thanks guys

This has been covered many times before, but if you get a header off ebay, you will need the exhaust system and catalytic converter for an EX model. Or otherwise, you will need to go to a muffler shop and have a catalytic converter welded in (or mounted with stock flanges but more likely welded in)
As for the secondary O2 sensor, if you buy a catalytic converter for an EX model, there should be a position for it already... or if you get a universal catalytic converter or high flow cat, you'll need to get an o2 simulator to remove it entirely.

I'm assuming you've done this change over and have a dyno slip to prove how much the power gain is?

On a personal note, my 1/8th mile time went from 11.8 to 11 after changing out for a DCSport header, high flow catco cat, and full 2.5" exhaust and high flow muffler from stock.

If speed is what you're going for, every fraction of a second is worth it, don't you think?

Cool go buy your $400 header, $1000 oem EX catalytic converter, and enjoy your 3hp. Oh and Killa, with that disgustingly slow of a time it's easy to see large differences from run to run. When I was where you are now, I was bouncing around 16.8 to 17.3 all the time in the 1/4, with no changes to the car.

A good header, catalytic converter, and cat-back exhaust system can produce a good increase in HP and responsiveness. I'd say a rough average of about 15-20HP, give or take, depending on the motor you're using and your setup. You need to purchase a header designed for your motor (the motor you have is stamped on the engine block next to your transmission, below the distributor).

The ceramic coated header will help keep heat down in your engine bay, but can rust. The stainless steel costs more and doesn't do as good of a job keeping heat down, but won't rust. Both pretty much do the same thing, so it's your choice which one you purchase.

Don't be mad at me, be mad at the fact that it costs a ton of money for a handful of power for your engine. Go buy your header, then buy an exhaust and intake, and take a nice 17 second trip down the 1/4 and you'll agree with me. Oh and remember you get what you pay for. I bought an OBX header for my stock engine for $230 (very cheap for a header) and it gave me 6whp up top, and 3hp down low, but sounded like shit. Then I bought a new Greddy Header for $400 and it sounded great, but added the same. Go tell a Trans Am owner you just spent $200 and $50 in fabrication costs at a muffler shop to go from 92whp to 98whp horsepower.. he'll laugh at you.

No, but I was in his shoes. Instead of getting laughed at I bought a Type R engine where mods actually do something besides empty my wallet. And before you say "oh well excuse me for not being able to afford something like that", yes you can. I got a loan and pay $150 a month for it.. that's the cost you'll be paying in mods every month looking for that one thing that will make you happy with your car, but the only difference is, you never will be, and I am.

A good quality header will range from $250 - $400 depending on brand and the design you want. A decent high-flow catalytic converter can be had for around $100 and a good cat-back for about $350, give or take. Sure it costs about $1,000 for the entire exhaust setup (with good quality parts) but considering how highly tuned the Honda motors are in the first place it costs a lot of money to squeeze more power out of them. My CAI retails for $250. I gain a whopping 1-3HP at best. Am I sorry I bought it? Absolutely not.

Instead of bashing his ride and motives, you should be more helpful in your posts. He didn't ask if it was a good idea, he wanted advice on what to buy and information regarding the product. He owns a Honda, not a Trans-Am. If he wants to work on his Honda, let him. Not everyone can get a loan for a motor. Let him work with what he has. He also is inexperienced, so a motor swap is something he should research and familiarize himself with for sometime in the future when he can plan for it. Everyone has to start somewhere. His motor is a good platform for beginning to understand engine basics and modifications.

If you want to help out, fine. But if you continue to be rude and hate on other people, then I suggest you take your attitude to another forum.

Sorry, I'm not cruel enough to tell him to continue wasting his money on something that will never be able to beat family sedans.

Re: Header for a Civic CX Hatch 1997

Maybe he's not out to beat anyone? Not everyone has racing people in mind when they modify their car. Some people just want more power and responsiveness out of their daily driver.

D-series Honda motors are still a good platform for performance. You won't see the same numbers out of a D-series as you would a B-series, H-series, or K-series, but they still are good motors for tuning. A D-series when built properly can handle up to about 400hp before it reaches it's operational limits. That coupled with the light Civic chassis and a good suspension can be plenty fast.
