2001 WIndatar idle surge

I have a 2001 Windstar SEL. The idle surges up and down when the car is in gear and at idle. I have tried a fuel injector cleaner, premium fuel, new air filter, and today replaced the idle control valve. No improvement. The RPM's vill bounce between 500 and 750. Any suggestions before I take it to the dealer will be appreciated.

Have you changed your PCV valve recently? At any rate, it sound like you may have a vacuum leak somewhere. Is your Check Engine Light coming on?

I agree with above suggestions. Also another poster said cleaning his MAF sensor with circuit board cleaner eliminated this problem??? .... perhaps, or perhaps he corrected an air leak in the process??

Re: 2001 WIndatar idle surge

I bought my used 2001 Windstar in July and have noticed that the engine surges also. Not really a problem, but noticeable. Any solutions?

I had the same thing happen on my '01 and the dealer flashed the PCM with updated software which fixed the problem. But that was while the van was under warranty a few years ago.

Re: 2001 WIndatar idle surge

Thanks for the info, roal rascal. Do you still own your '01? Mine has 50,000 m. and I'm trying to decide if I should buy an extended warrenty for $1700. The warrenty would cover up to 100,000 m. which I'll reach in 2 years or so.

I still have the '01, has about 54,000 miles on it I think. So far it has been a great vehicle. I've only replaced the rear shocks and front brakes.

I Own A 2001 Windstar About 40,000 On The Clock. I Had An Idle Problem Also. I Cleaned The M.a.f. Sensor And Fixed The Problem. Sensor Lives In The Air Duct Between Air Cleaner And Throttle Body. Remove This Hose, You Will See Sensor In This Hose. Spray It With A Contact Cleaner Or Carb. Cleaner. If You Have Access To Air Blow It Off Good. Re-install. Fixed Mine.
