1st grinding , 2nd , 3rd 4th and 5th nothing

Ok here's the situation....The car is a 1993 Mitsubishi 3000 Gt with 85,000 miles . First things first , after i start the car and release the clutch, the clutch comes up and stops about half way then hesitates. When i start the car in 1st its stalls , if i start it in neutral it runs fine but 1 st gear grinds and it wont even begin to go in to any other gear.

If anybody else has run across this problem , please help , I'de hate to replace the clutch if the master or slave cylinders are at fault.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 1st grinding , 2nd , 3rd 4th and 5th nothing

that defiantely sounds like a hydraulic problem.

my bet would be slave cylinder leaking but you need to check it out.
check your fluid level 1st by prising off the top on the clutch master cylinder next to your washer bottle. if its low chaces are the seals inside the slave cylinder are shot.

if you need anymore help, mail me and i will talk you through the process.

must not be it

We checked the level of the fluid and it seems to be fine. Do you or anyone else have any other ideas what it could be?

something in the lines may be jammed up.... flush the lines and see.

agreed, sounds like hydraulic problem. visit www.stealth316.com and there are instructions for bleeding the hydraulic clutch lines (master/slave cylinders). that would be my suggestion. air bubbles in the lines could cause this problem, but also, your master adn/or slave cylinder(s) could have just failed and broke. in which case, you would obviously need to replace them. follow instructions at stealth316.com, then if no luck, take it to a tranny shop.

Here is my update:

The master cylinder was replaced but the car wasn't fixed. The guy working on my car thinks the problem is with the clutch arm, fingers in the pressure plate, or just the pressure plate itself but he is not sure. So the mystery remains. Hopefully he will figure it out when he takes it to his shop.

The guy found the problem. It was the throwout bearing that was broke. I'm just going to get a whole new clutch kit put in. It's costing me almost 700 but the guy I bought it from said he'll pay half since it broke right after I bought it...so hopefully I'll be getting my car back within a day or two. I haven't been able to drive it for 2 1/2 weeks.
