1995 1.3 L crankshaft pulley clearance
I'm new to this forum, so hello everyone. My car has 86000 miles on it and an automatic transaxle. I've never worked on anything but old Ford pickups before so I'm having trouble figuring out a lot of things. My main question is how to get clearance to remove the crankshaft pulley so I can change the timing belt? I took off the splash shield and I couldn't even get a socket and wrench in there. Can I disconnect the front passenger side motor mount and lower the engine enough to get the pulley off without removing the center bolt? Do I need to loosen more than one motor mount and how far is it safe to lower the engine without damaging anything? I have a factory service manual and it doesn't say anything about lowering the engine so I was wondering if there are special tools that have to be used to do this job.
Thanks a lot for your comments. |

The 1.0's are a lot easier to get the pulley out. The 1.3's all have clerance problems. On the passenger side motor mount, you'll see the 2 screws that hold the mount to the engine bracket. Loosen those till they're almost all the way out, and the motor should be low enough then to slide the pulley off. If not, remove them completely. Make sure to have a jack under the motor to support it, also, so you can raise it back up.

Thanks for your advice and giving it so soon after my post. I'm going to do the job over the holidays when I have more time.
