Most likely, you have a bad sending unit. This is attached to the side of the fuel pump which is inside the gas tank. The sending unit alone at GM costs about $135. You can buy the whole pump assembly w/ sending unit on Ebay - - PAY attention to your part number.
To replace it (yourself), either take off the bed OR drop the tank. For $15.00 I'd buy a Chiltons manual...it has paid off many times over for me now. It walks you thru the process of dropping the tank, step-by-step. I just replaced the sending unit in my '00 Chevy Express van. I dropped the tank on that job. If you do drop the tank, run it down as far as you can (where the light would come on normally - which indicates there is about 4 gallons in the tank). Change your fuel filter at this time (if you drop the tank). My guage has gone bad as well and I'm getting ready to replace mine. |
