Re: Where's the thermostat
i just did it this weekend. the thermostat is locate just to the front of the where the intake enters the block. if you trace the coolant hose from the drivers side of the radiator it will be rite where it enters the block.
be careful getting in there, there are two bolts and they are hard to get out unless you have socket extensions. and when putting hose back on be careful not to cros thread the bolts. this fixed my overheating problem, and my low coolant light problem. |

Re: Re: Where's the thermostat
Thank You for the help, the thermostat I got was the wrong one and cannot find one anywhere, I'm being told it cannot be ordered. But if you just changed yours it must be available somewhere.

Re: Where's the thermostat
Any GM dealer should be able to order it for you.

Re: Where's the thermostat
If you have two cars you can pull the 'stat out of the Olds and then take that with you to get the new one.
One trick I learned a while back was to drill a very small hole (maybe 1/32") in the outer rim of the thermostat, as close as possible to the center. If this works as planned, it will be inside the coolant passage opening in the engine block. The idea of this very small hole is to allow any trapped air bubbles in the engine to make their way through the system abd get out so you can fill it up with coolant. If you do it the old fashioned way you have to get the engine hot enough for the stat to open in order to get these air bubbles out. Perhaps it is not as much of a problem now that they have moved the filler from the radiator to the overflow tank but it is simple to do so I do it any time I replace one. |

Re: Where's the thermostat
Not sure how to post pictures on this thing but can you edit this pic (or find a better one) to show exactly where to drill this small hole?
