How-To: Remove tumbler from Ignit. switch?

Hey all...there's no action in the RamVan forum so I thought I would try this here since it's a generic topic anyway.

1994 B250 van, 5.2, 188k miles, orig engine/auto tranny w/OD.

Ignition switch no longer turns far enough to engage starter. When it gets to the point where the starter should engage, it's only turning on the warning lights/buzzer.

I have the switch loose from the column, but I don't know how to get the black plastic key insert thing off and the tumbler out..anyone know how this procedure works?

Thanks...appreciate it..my van is not moving at the moment!

I've never done a 94 Dodge column, but there's probably an electrical hookup to the switch that will need to be disconnected.

Also, on some of those there is a small release button or catch you can hit that will release it. Time for a good visual inspection.

Hey
Switch is off the column and unplugged from the harness, so that's done. Also, there is no release button on this column. I think 1993? was the last year for release button...but not sure.

Anyway, it's getting the black key guard and the lock tumbler out of the switch itself that isn't obvious, it doesn't seem to have any apparent release mechanism...at least that I can see. There are little clear plastic tangs that snap into grooves in the side of the housing, but even when they're pryed loose the tumbler / key guard still refuses to come out.

thanks

Re: How-To: Remove tumbler from Ignit. switch?

It was a long time ago, [so don't quote me] but one switch I worked with, you had to turn the key from the off position to another position, then it would release. You might try holding the unit, key in, and turning the key until it clicks.

Be careful when it comes out, some small parts might try to get away from you.
