Oil Pump for 95 Safari

Hi there, have 210850 on 95 Safari. Just had major work done, (intake manifold plus trimmings, tranny flush and filter, fuel system flush, front and rear blower motors etc). Near the end of 400 mile round trip, lost oil pressure, engine overheated. Got off highway after about two miles. Shop says oil pump is gone, and found metal shavings in oil pan. Recommended new engine. Figured I could at least install new pump, pickup tube/screen and shaft myself, but pickup tube/screen does not easily fit into pump. Does it need to be pressed on? Not ready to junk this vechile yet.

Thanks. glebeaux

if you lost oil pressure, the motor is probably trashed. was it knocking?

sounds like you already brought the pump, yes it is a tight fit, so it doesn't fall out. have an engine shop press it in there.

let us know how the motor is.
my 95 has 103,000 miles, and I beat on it daily

blur, thanks for the reply. Found an Oil Pickup Tube installation tool at napaonline.com. Also found some good tips on installing tube to the pump at www.enjoythedrive.com. May not even need the tool. They say lube the tube and freeze it for about an hour, and in the meantime, slip the bare oil pump body in a pan of water and household cooking oil. Bring the pump to a boil and, with the help of some oven mitts, quickly slide the cold pickup tube into the hot oil pump body. A little leery of putting the pump in water and veggie oil, might just boil some 30w in the old turkey fryer. Stay tuned. glebeaux

your procedure will help you.
definately freeze the pickup. it will shrink by a few thousanths.

and just bake the entire oil pump in the oven at 400 degrees. that should expand it by a few thousanths as well.

I wouldn't want to be frying motor oil. if that stuff splatters, you will get burnt. if you do boil motor oil, use synthetic oil. it won't burn and turn into goo inside your oil pump.

you have to set the pickup height so there is the proper clearance between the pickup and the oil pan.

let us know how it works out. I'm curious... as I say your motor is damaged beyond replacing the oil pump......
