Car problems

Hi, i just bought a 89 240sx, it has 122k miles on it, it Automatic, it worked fine for about 2 weeks, i bought it on Nov. 22nd, 04. I wanted to do a burn out, but i had the grear on "2" by accident, i held the break down and reved my car, the car didnt move or burnout, then i noticed the gear, and i thought i put it in Drive, but it I put it in Neutral, reved up, then i was like, for get it, lets go get some gas, cus my car was almost on empty, i turned my car around and it stalled! I tried to turn it on, it wont, so I call Kyle over, and he unplugs my Fule pump fuse, and trurned it on till it worked. The car was idleing at 1500, so we drove it to his house, and Kyle and his dad, put back my stock air intake, " i had an aftermarket air filter" they said the their was a Sensore not bluged in, and the aftermarket part doesnt have the Sensor in it. Next day i drove it to work, it ran fine, on my way home, it wanted to stall at a stop sign, and when i first press the gas, it acts like it wants to stall, then, i drove it to a gas station, filled up gas, and it didnt start, i called my brother over, he tried, nothing, i bought this fule intake cleaner for like $1.50 form the gas station, and i put in in my gas tank, the car is still not turning on, it wants to when i turn the key, but it doesnt. I left the car at the gas station over night, next day the car worked, its been working.

I took the car to Nissan, they said i need this :
1.) Car has bad Temp Sensor Connector ( Corroded ) repair - $78.00

2.) Bad AIV Valve, Box, and Hose - $372.00

3.)Bad Air Flow Meter - $568.00

4.)Tuneup w/ NGK PLugs - total of $55.00 for spark plugs, wiers, and
smthing els - 149.95

My car doesnt move as fast as it did, and i had a 100lb sand bag in the trunk, befor i tried to do the burn out.
I NEED HELP!

sounded like a bad MAF to me, or a Bad aiv. valve. you can buy a used MAF at a junk yard for a fraction of the price and install it yourself. i bought my 300ZX MAF for only 100 bucks.

Re: Car problems

i wouldnt recommend doing burnouts in an old ass auto 240. Something is bound to break. Did you say you were doing neutral drops???? i strongly dont recommend that. Just start fixing everything they said one by one...if the problem goes away then you dont have buy everything they said.

Re: Car problems

"i got 99 problems but a bith aint one...hit me :P

doesnt sound like the burnout had much to do with any of the problems the nissan stealer diagnosed. a maf is a mass airflow meter (sensor), that lets your ecu know how much air is flowing into the engine so it will know how much fuel to add to the mixture. the no start problem could be due to that. the high idle is probably the AIV (Air Idle Valve). search ebay or local junk yards for either, prices from dealers are ridiculous. both are quite easy to install

Aiv, can I install it my self at home?

One more thing, the previous owner of the car had an aftermarket Air intake, and some aftermarket lil inake thing AIV, so it was not connected to the Air filter "the aftermarket one", and he had shortend the length of the pipe that was comming form the AIV to the stock air intake, now i have a peice of thick rubber connecting my stock air inake and the AIV.

when im at a stop sign, or a red light, my car idles at 500, then it jumped to 600 - 700, then goes down, then it goes to like 900 - 1000, and when i turn the heat off it goes to 500 - 700 i dont even feel the car running...

befor i had all my problems my car was fast, it would pick up fast and go, but now it seems slow!

What is Seafoam, and what can i use it for?

Re: Car problems

Get rid of the AIV. All it does is cause problems. Try cleaning the MAFS with a q tip and rubbing alcohol. Be very gentle when you do. Better yet, just spray some carb cleaner on the two prongs. Try wiggling the connection to the MAFS as well.

www.240sx.org has a lot of write-ups that could help you.

i have an 89' and it is doing the exact same thing, not as bad as yours though, im taking it into auto tomorrow hopefully i can figure out what is going on then ill tell you, does yours dip into 500 rpm when you break hard easier than if you slow to a stop? thats when mine does it, it has stalled once, but started right back up, im just taking it REALLY easy for now.

Re: Car problems

Try cleaning them. What if your bill is only $10 for carb cleaner, rubbing alcohol, and Qtips? Much better than $1200 huh? Temp sensor you can test with a multi-meter. Read the 240sx FAQ for resistance of the sensor.

k, i just took my air filter box apart, and their is a lot of black crap on the filter, it look like its comming from the AIV, because all that dirt is right under the hole of the aiv hose.

i have and after market filter, it does not have an air flow sensor tho, what i do?

Re: Car problems

how does it not have an air flow sensor??
the mafs isnt ON the filter, its AFTER the filter.. the outside probably looks like a little black box.. about the size of a cell phone..(yeah thats not very descriptive but i can't think of anything the same size at the moment..)
