DOHC ZC Swap into 89 STD Civic idle issues

I recently installed a DOHC ZC into my 89 STD civic. Having went the ZC tranny route, I also had to swap out my spindles and practically whole front suspension so I could make it work. That all went fine, as well as the whole swap. My real problem is now that the car is running, it is bogging down so bad that its not driveable. Also the #1 and #2 Exhaust ports are not heating my header up as hot as #3 and #4. All I know is #3 and #4 will burn the crap out of you, and #1 and #2 is cold. The idle is horrible, and the car back fires often and seems to be running on only 2 cylinders. I have checked the spark plugs and #1 and #2 are gas drenched as well as the piston tops. As for #3 and #4 they looked perfect. I was wondering what might be the issue. The car is also throwing a Code 10. Thanks

HAHAHA for some reason that sounded really funny to me.

Sounds like #1 and 2 are missing. Check your plugs, plug wires, and dizzy. is it throwing any codes?

My mpfi swap threw a code 10 when i finished it. It wasnt very driveable at anything but WOT. It later threw a code 14, and thats when i figured out that the IAT and the EACV plugs were switched. I swapped them around and that solved my problem.

Unhappy Still not fixed :-\

I have tried about everything I know of on this bitch and nothing is working out for me. I am going to try a pre-wired harness on my car this evening and hope that it was just a wiring issue. I am also going to take another set of NGK plug wires with me and another dizzy to test on it. All I know is this swap has been 100% of a pain in my A$$. I am still open to any suggestions, and desperatly need this car running again, so please help anyone that has experienced of anything similar.

first pull the 2 gas drenched plugs out of the motor. put them in the wire and ground to engine and check if ur getting spark to those 2 plugs, if u r then great put it back together and try it again, at first when i said the exhaust ports were cold i thought it wasnt getting any fuel but by the sounds of it it is, also, try to switch the 2 wires around on the dizzy for the 2 non firing cylinders, firing order might be off, that happened to me a long time ago when i did my head gasket. giver a try and see what happens

Re: DOHC ZC Swap into 89 STD Civic idle issues

Tonight I re-wired the entire engine and checked everything that could go wrong and the problem was still there. Then I switched the number 1 and 2 dis. plugs and the engine runs but is throwing codes 9,10,14. All four cylinders are now getting hot and firing right, but the idle is still hell. Any suggestions as to how to fix the idle since it is not driveable idling like it is. The idle is going from 900rpm to 2700rpm constantly back and forth.

Re: DOHC ZC Swap into 89 STD Civic idle issues

code 9, #1 cylinder position, i'm gonna assume its not set to TDC right.

code 10, Intake air Temp, (IAT) my guess, u have the plugs backwards for that, theres 2 plugs that are the same, switch with the EACV plug

code 14, Electronic Air Control Valve, (EACV) switch with the plug on the IAT

Re: DOHC ZC Swap into 89 STD Civic idle issues

Switched the plugs, got rid of two of the codes, but still throwing a code 9. I got the timing calmed down, and the idle by playing with my throttle cable and my dizzy, but I have to drive the car at WOT for the idle to not fuck up. Other wise I will be ridding and it will jump 1500rpms then drop 1500 rpms constantly every 3-5 seconds. At WOT it runs like a charm.

try to check your timing, it might be off since the code 9 is the Cylinder#1 position.

you never know have you check to make sure that all of the intake plugs are plug? it sort of sounds like a intake leak to me. but it also could be the IAC.

Re: DOHC ZC Swap into 89 STD Civic idle issues

If you have your idle screw set to high or low your eacv can't compensate for it and the idle will jump like you are saying. Try adjusting your idle screw some.

when you stop at a stop sign or light does the idle jump from 1500 to 0 and back to 1500 if so you may have a leak in your rad or the the coolent temp sensor could be bad thats what happend to me.

Re: DOHC ZC Swap into 89 STD Civic idle issues

No idle screw on that intake manifold or throttle body. I hunted high and low and saw nothing even close to one. The only thing that would affect my idle that I was able to notice was the throttle cable, and I did adjust it and got my idle to a nice 785 RPM's which I was happy with, but the idle still jumps after I press the gas or raise the throttle even 50 RPM's. Also it is now throwing a code 14. I also replaced the dizzy, which didnt fix anything, but it was worth a try, and lastly I ordered some Bosch Platinum 4 spark plugs(hoping they will be alot hoter and might fix my problem) for the engine, as well as some new spark plug wires. Any new suggestions?
