Alternator belt sqeaking wont stop!

sohc,no a/c,
this has been a problem for a little over a month!
I've replaced the alternator,3 different belts & the water pump, belt dressing,
I cant get it to stop,
I've went from my belt being real loose to being very tight
& all the way around!
It still wont stop,
it only sqeaks at 2300rpm down to 2100rpm,sqwilling,
when ever it drops past the rpm's,
does anyone know of any tricks or home ideas I could use
to try to stop this sqeaking?
I was beginning to think it was somthing loose or a bolt,
I've tightened all bolts & wd-40'ed somethings,still there,
its not the worst problem, but when everything else is going good
you have a loud sqeaking noise thats louder then your exhaust!

Re: Alternator belt sqeaking wont stop!

If you have tried loosening it, tightening it, and tried three differnt belts with belt dressing, it may be the alt itself.

i agree, and belt dressing is the absolute worst product you can use, it will actually eat through the belt over time and can cause major damage if the belt splits during operation.

Re: Re: Alternator belt sqeaking wont stop!

when I had the old alternator tested it showed the regulator was bad,
when I replaced the alternator, the car did not start right up,
I think the battery was just so dead,
so I jumped it,started up,been running fine,
thanks for helping me out on this one,
its been one of my problems for a while,
I was hoping someone knew somthing to do so that it could stop sqeaking,
something that would make it sticking better or somthing,
but a mechanic told my brother to put soap on his belt,
it helps the pulley in some way, maybe sticky or somthing,
has anyone heard of this?

btw,my belt also sqeaks when I'm in reverse when I let off the clutch a little bit quicker then slow,
& everytime my car jerks,(shifts)

Re: Alternator belt sqeaking wont stop!

I'd put my money on the fact that you probably don't have it tight enough, and the belts slipping.

thats what I'm thinking, but it gets so tight, it has no play,
I'm going out to tighten it her ein a minute,
also I put some coca cola on the belt today, thats what my brother told me to do,
it helps make the belt sticky,
but who knows?/?

Re: Alternator belt sqeaking wont stop!

belts arnt supposed to be sticky. you should have 1/2" of slack in the middle of the widest point between pulleys.

Re: Re: Alternator belt sqeaking wont stop!

I took the belt off, started it up
& its still sqeaking,
so now I know its not the alt belt,
this is very confusing & I sort of hope it'll go away somtime somehow,
I may never know!

Re: Alternator belt sqeaking wont stop!

Probably the timing belt tensioner or the water pump. My bet is on the tensioner. GL

Re: Re: Alternator belt sqeaking wont stop!

thanks for the ideas people,
I was thinking it was the timing belt for some reason,
but I changed the water pump less then a month ago,
because I thought that was it,but it wasnt,
I never did change the timing belt,
but we took it off,it looked good,
we put it back on ,how would this make a sqeak?
its on by grooves in the cams & water pump pulley?/
I dont c how it would make a sqeak, but if this is my only way out,
I think I'ma change my timing belt sometime soon & see what happens.

Re: Alternator belt sqeaking wont stop!

the tensioner on a timing belt is usally the culprit of squeaks. and i really hope you never put soap or a can of soda on your belt, prolly ruined more than you fixed.
