Question 2002 malibu no power

My wife's malibu has 57,000 miles on it. Last week it started hesitating on take off, and seem to be loosing power. I changed plugs in it and put in some injector cleaner in a take of gas. Now it has hardly no power, it will only get to 50 mph max. If you punch it on take off it will stall, you have to easy into it on take off and slowly work up to speed. If you try to give it to much gas the rpms go up, and you loose speed. If you back off on the gas, the rpms come back down around 2000 and it will slowly pick up speed. I had the codes on the check engine red, and they were po404 and po301. Misfire cylinder one, and egr flow.

Any body have any advice on what to do. I have changed plugs, wires, #1 coil, and the egr valve. None of which has really changed anything.

It has a 3.1 v6 in it.

Except for the "punch it and it stalls" part, it sounds almost like your transmission is slipping or the forward pump is going. I had a Dodge Caravan that did everything except the "punch & stall" when the forward pump went...

I've experienced a loss of power under load a number of times. One time it was simply a dirty fuel filter, another time it was bad spark plug wires. I'd go to the filter, first, mainly because you said it stalls when you try to speed up.

Also, if your injectors are really glogged, the stuff you put in the gas tank to clean them, isn't going to work. You will either need to buy the injector cleaner that you hook up to your fuel rail, and shut down the fuel pump, or take it to the dealer, and let them clean the injectors.

Just some thoughts that might help.

I tried the filter, and a bottle of injection cleaner you put in the tank. Still have the same problem. I did notice yesterday that if you stayed below 2000 rpms it would slowly pickup speed, and shift ok but it still will only go about 50 mph max.

Unless someone gives me something pretty quick I am taking it to the dealer this morning.

Hey,
My name is Sandy and I know this has been a long time ago, but I have a 2002 malibu and it is doing the exact same thing that you have described. I was wondering if you ever found out what the problem was.
I have had a new fuel pump, spark plugs, filter. Please help.
Thank you.
Sandy

Re: 2002 malibu no power

is the check engine light on ?
if not, then the engine controls / sensors are not sensing anything unusuall . Unless the PCM has gone bad.
it is probably gone to be something like a slipping trans, though i think your revs would be higher than normal for the same speed. ... or your catalytic converter is clogged. fuel filter , restricted air filter. make sure tha vacuum hose from the manifold to the brake booster did not come lose.

Re: 2002 malibu no power

I had a 2003 malibu in the service shop with same problem. No power, slightly low idle, bogs and dies at increased power.

I had a plugged converter.

To test: unscrew upstream 02 sensor & test drive. If power increases, you have a plugged cat.

Check exhaust shop, aftermarket weld in's not too expensive.
