How long will a 4l60E last?

I was just curious how many miles people have put on their transmission before it went to crap on them.

Yeah, my mom's 97 or 98 blazer had it's tranny go at like 48k and my firebird's up to 80K and I'm not sure if it's had a rebuild or not.

Re: How long will a 4l60E last?

It depends on the application.Performance apps, the lifecycle varies drastically, but in a chevy work van or work truck, ive sen them last 250k miles! They like the highway a lot more than they like the stop and go city driving. The weaker the motor, the longer they last. How you drive them matters too.But they should have called it the*4l60E problematic* if you ask me tho..

Re: How long will a 4l60E last?

they usually wear prematurely due to codeable external sensors causing the 1-2 shift to be unsavory(usually when hot),from what i understand you can get updates for the valvebodys on them to correct the shift hot problems. And if you have a problem with the TPS,or one of the speed sensors, they will have a shortened life expectancy

That was the first $200 repair just a few days after I got the car. I assume that the transmission place fixed teh problem entirely.

Re: How long will a 4l60E last?

they didnt have a th400 in 82' t/a's....they had a 350 hyde or a borg warner 4 speed. If sombody has added a th400 to your car, then it should have a switch built into the gas pedal to control detent

Re: How long will a 4l60E last?

if yours is a 3 speed auto its a 350 hydromatic. You can tell the difference by looking at the pan,a 400's pan is square and a 350 pan isnt,it has an edge cut off the square towards the back of its pan. Many other ways to tell, but the pan is a dead givaway

Re: How long will a 4l60E last?

if you dont see any wires going to it anywhere, you have a non-lockup 350 hydromatic. No it doesnt have sensors, just several small valves that use fluid and spring pressures to make it shift. If yours is acting up you should have it shift kitted.Dont use a b&m shift kit tho,They charge you 30 bucks for a valve body gasket, and a drill bit...A transgo shift reprogram kit comes with several sets of govoner springs, servo spring, and many more other springs that change the 1-2 and 2-3 shift points.I can put mine into first any time anywhere,no matter what, second too.You can make them shift harder, but more importantly, you can make them shift softer with a reprogram kit

Re: How long will a 4l60E last?

After i shift kitted mine,it lunges forward on shifts, instead of losing a fender on a shift like it did before. It had to do with what rpm it shifted at.My cam wakes up around 3,000 rpm's,and is good for 7krpm.So if it shifts before 3000,it winds up slow until it gets to about 3krpm

Re: How long will a 4l60E last?

Sticky, did the work come with a warrenty, and did they say it had any other problems.?usually a problem in the areas i have pointed out set off the check engine light. Was this the case?If it shifts okay, and if the check engine light os off,and they said nothing is wrong, then you should be okay.

I went to autozone.com to check out tranny rebuild kits and the only tranny options they said my car has is:

THM200C (lock up converter) or,
THM200-4R(overdrive,16 fluid bolt pan)

I thought my car had the 350 hydromatic?
