battery failure

I have a 1992 lincoln mark 7 with 175,000 miles on it. It has a 5.0 H.O. EFI mustang engine in it. Lately i have been having a problem with the battery dying. If I jump start the car I can drive it around all day, as long as I dont let it sit for a couple hours. But after it sits overnight, the battery loses the charge. I recently purchased a new Optima red top battery and I am still having the same problem. Got and ideas on what could be wrong or how i could fix it?

problem

I know that you think that it is the alternater. But i just had that replaced 1 month ago. I also purchased a new optima battery and a new selenoid. What could be causes the problem. Could it be a power short?

Re: battery failure

well, if you're absolutely sure you're alternator is bad (have it tested), then you have a bad electrical drain... those can be difficult to track down.

Re: battery failure

Try testing all the wires running from the alternator and the battery. You said the the alternator is new so maybe some one didn't connect one of the wires correctly. Basically trial and error, it's frustrating but necessary.

Re: battery failure

Check the battery cables, make sure they are corrosion free. Also checl where the negitive cable attaches to the block, maybe give it a good cleaning.

Re: Re: battery failure

I finally found out the problem. The Alternator wasnt bad and the battery wasnt bad either. The new battery and alternater werent mixing well. The new alternator was overcharging the battery and the car still had the old voltage regulator on it, so I just got a new one and it works great now. No problems. Thank you for all of your advice.

Andy,

What kind of yacht are you buying? can you just Fed-Ex one of those models to me instead?
