help ... lifter problem maybe

My car has been making some clicking noises when I push the gas. Oil is fine just changed it maybe 2,000 miles ago was getting rdy to change it again soon. Car only has 37,000 miles on it. I dont have the money to take it to the garage right now but im thinking its one of the lifter(s). One of my friends said I could be running too low of a grade oil maybe need to get a higher grade. I just been using 30 weight. Any help or suggestions would be grateful ... thx

Lifter tick sounds like a time bomb...if you do have it, it wont cause any damage, just change the oil and filter...go with redline(it usually eliminates the ticking). As for weight and viscosity...I don't know what your manual recommends and what works for you guys, so I'll leave that for someone else to answer.

Re: help ... lifter problem maybe

did a oil change this morning ... the garage I had it changed at said the oil I used was just fine for that car and they changed it for me ... Still getting the clicking noise when pressing the gas that garage evne told me it was the lifters they opened the valve cover and took a better look and said it was just one of the lifters that was bad but they woudn't know which one it was and I would probably just have to buy a whole set of lifters....

Re: help ... lifter problem maybe

I had the same thing happen to my car about 2 months ago. I run 50 weight synthetic oil from amsoil, so I know quality isnt a problem. I let the problem ride out a little, and now it has stopped. Search the threads, I asked the same question, and got alot of replies to it when we still had a few people that I respected alot. Im not sure where they are now, must of been from stupid people posting. Oh well. I've found a new forum that blows everything else away.

Re: help ... lifter problem maybe

Hi - sorry for reviving a dead thread but I wanted to pass along some info which may be helpful. I have had this same tapping/ticking noise and I had my garage run a conditioner through it and it my lifters are no longer tapping. Here is the thread from another forum with the info they used, etc.

hope this solves your problem.

Re: help ... lifter problem maybe

Sorry to bring back this old thread, but I wanted to clear something up. I have had that same clicking noise and I went to the dealer and asked them and they told me that it was actually my oil filter, b/c Mitsu's oil filters have a "double check valve" in them or something as to where the aftermarket ones only have a single. Not sure if that is true or not, but it seems that changing out my filter really has gotten rid of the ticking in my lifters! And, i only paid $15 for three filters.

I don't think I understand: so which filter did you then use to get rid of the noise?

The filters that Mitsu originally puts onto the cars. You can buy them at the dealer
