help w/ transmission...

I bough my Ls w/ 25k and drove for about 6K and i started to have a weird problem w/ my transmission.

It has problem switching into 4th and 5th gear and if it does not switch it will display E where it should display P,R,N,D. I tooked it to the dealer and they said it was a solenoid problem. They replaced that and said the problem is fixed. But the problem is it did not happen all the time so you can't really say if it was fixed. So the next day after the dealer I got the same exect problem. So i broght it back to the dealer and he said we dont know what it is meaby its something internal. They wanted to change the whole transmission. So i said no way transmission has no problems driving it just sounds like something electrical. So they gave me back the money for labor. So I figured out a way to switch it, whenever it would not switch i would put it into neutral and back into D and it would switch. So i figured I ll do that until transmission goes. Now i have 45K and it still does that, i put 14K switching the gear by putting it into neutrol and back into D. But its really annoying. Also, when it does not want to switch I tried putting into D4 and it would switch to 3 gear and D5 would be in fourth gear. the biggest problem is for it to switch to 5th gear. I just dont know which electrical component would be the problem. If anyone had this kind of problem and knows how to fix it. Let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanx

Re: help w/ transmission...

First unless you want to be spammed to the high heavans I would remove the email addy.

Now in regards to the tranny. I have had a long run of issues with the transmission and the problem you are describing is new to me. However, everytime they repaired my tranny all they did was replace the solenoid valve and evertime the problem would return until this last repair.

I took my LS to a different dealer becasue I was obviously tired of the canned BS I was getting. Any way the folks that diaged and fixed my car replaced two parts... the solenoid and the valve body. I have put nearly 20k miles on my car since the repair and not even a hint of the problem, knock on wood, has occured.

As much as I hate to say it no one but lincoln can fix this transmission. You can get a new tranny for about 1500 dollars + labor and I can assure you that you will spend that easily in parts trying to fix yours.

I was told that you get a 3yr/36k mile warranty on the tranny if you replace it. I did not follow up on it yet becasue I have not needed to fortunately.

Bottom line call around and interview the lincoln shops visit them, check to see if they are AAA approved and look them up in the BBB website. Pay with a CC if you can becasue that will get yuo dispute arbitration if you need it.

Many Thanks I dubbed it the Black Pearl because FLM was a sponsor the the Disney movie Pirates of the Caribbean and since I had all the Jolly Roger stuff going it seemed a natural fit… Hey please keep us updated on you LS and don't hesitate to post new questions. I have had the misfortune of a lot of problem with my LS but it is still the fun’est thing I have driven and I like you am always looking for new information on problems and resolutions.

what kind of issues did you have w/ your tranny. How was it acting up. Also how much did the valve cost you?

It was not upshifting smoothly despite having reflashed plus when I put the car into reverse there were loooong delay that got longer and longer and eventually would kick when it shifted into reverse.

I bought my parts from fordpartsnetwork.com great prices and customer service there. I do not recall the price though. But the replacement of both did remedy the problem.

I actually did a small Q&A with the lead service guy at the new dealer I go to well before I took it in for the repair. He explained that they had repaired numerous LS's and quickly learned that the long term fix was to replace both parts.

I think the valve body is a core return item so you might have to pay a core charge as well.

top of the day to you.

Re: help w/ transmission...

I am having the same problem with the "E" appearing in the PRND field and the "check transmission" indicator is on. This is an intermitant problem. I am curious, did you have the solenoid pack and valve cover replaced? If so, did that solve the problem. Thanks.

What year and engine and transmission?
Off hand being a Ford product and if you can shift the shift lever and get it to work it sounds like a problem with the MPLS sensor.
Manual lever position switch/sensor.
The problem should show up on a good engine/transmission capable scanner.
There may even be a code set.
Find a good repair shop or dealer and they should be able to find the problem.

Tip on going to the dealer
Ask that only a factory certified gasoline engine/transmission performance specialist work on your car.
Not all dealerships are concerned with how repairs are dispatched, and not all dealership techs bother to take advantage of the training offered by factory (the vast majority of which is paid training). If the dealer is uncooperative, ask for your money back and call around for a dealer that will accommodate you.

Tips on finding a good repair shop.
Check around Ask around
Word of mouth.
Family friends coworkers neighbors business people and delivery people.
Mailmen and parcel delivery people get around and notice a lot of stuff.
Even a good parts house knows what shops are good and not good.
Chamber of commerce and better business bureau and city hall.
If you find a good referral to a repair shop go look them over and talk to them.
Look for a clean looking busy place with nice people running it.
Ask a few questions and ask about their qualifications and training.
Not all places have trained tech/mechanics.
If they do not find a place that does.
Even all dealers do not have all trained techs/mechanics.

Good luck MT

Re: help w/ transmission...

I got the problem my second day of owning the car, today. The Check Transmission light just came on, but everything feels fine. I havent noticed any severe problem except for 2 of the stock Alpine speakers are popping, but dont sound blown, like theres an interferance. The dealership I got it from is fixing a scratch and putting new tires on for me in a couple weeks so hopefully they replace my speakers or check out the problem, I'll also have them check out the transmission error. If anyone is selling any splash guards, floor mats, chrome pieces, grilles, etc. lemme know I'm in the market.
